Dixie Daze Old Cars Tour

Share

The first cars coming through merely had their cards stamped at the Point School destination and moved on to the final stop in Momence. But the later cars coming through seemed not to be in such a hurry and stopped at the old schoolhouse and visited and browsed through its old and quaint furnishings.

The tiny library in the back corner of the school, the gigantic old wood-burning stove which takes up a good portion of the room, and the antique piano with most of its keys either out of tune or not working seemed to intrigue most of the visitors.

They asked questions, took photos and tried out the small desks as they tried to envision what a school day might have been in those days. A cool breeze coming in through the open doors made the schoolhouse very comfortable on that perfect summer day.

After the last cars passed through, the raffle for the 1983 Centennial hand-made quilt and other prizes donated by local businesses took place.

The quilt to be raffled off was made by Grant Park school students for the 1983 Centennial Celebration of the town of Grant Park. Each student sewed one of the blocks for the quilt and it was displayed and part of the Centennial celebration.

It had been recently donated to the Grant Park Historical Society, but the quilt needed backing to it to make it complete. Audrey Lehnert, a quilter in Grant Park, finished the quilt for the Dixie Daze event.

Vic Frahm, president of the Grant Park Historical Society, assisted by society member Joanne McKinstry picked the winning raffle tickets as the Grand Finale of the day. Winner of the Centennial lap quilt was Ileane Breslin.

Winners of the miscellaneous prizes were:

Gwyneth Stadt - Gift card from Bennett-Curtis House; Cyndi Mills - Cash prize from Dillman Hardware; Jacki Pecho - Folding lawn chair from Dillman Hardware; Doug Gore - $25 Casey's gas card from Erick's Remodeling; Sam Spitzig - $25 gift card from GP National Bank; Tinnie Meyers - $10 gift card from USA Restaurant; and Vic Frahm - $10 gift card from USA Restaurant.

Also, E.W. Graves - Large pizza from Casey's; Cindy Mills - Large pizza from Casey's; Elda Riechers - Bond from Main Source Bank; Doug Gore - Lawn chair from Country Co. Inc.; Shirley Ritter - Cash prize from Beckers Auto Repair; Mary Thomson - Stuffed animals from Flowers and Stones; and Meaghan Strange - Set of wrenches from Gleaners Lumber Co.

The raffle fundraiser for Point School was a success and helped bring funds to complete work still needed to be done at the school.
