Major Crime Taskforce seizes cache of illegal firearms Share
Kankakee County Major Crimes Task Force was called in to assist the Kankakee County Sheriffs Department investigations division in an investigation that eventually led to the seizure of 33 firearms. Many of the firearms are believed to be illegally altered automatic weapons. The incident began September 17, at approximately 10:36 a.m. when Sheriffs Deputies were called to an east Route 17 business in rural Grant Park on a battery complaint. The subject arrested, 44-year-old Gerald L. Carney, who listed an address in Bradley as his residence, allegedly had punched a co-worker after a dispute at the business. Subsequent investigation by the Kankakee County Major Crimes Task Force revealed that Carney, possessed illegally altered automatic firearms. A search of Carney's residence produced 33 firearms and a large amount of ammunition. It is believed that many of the firearms are illegally altered to make them automatic weapons. The weapons recovered included Uzi's, a Thompson sub-machine gun and firearms that are of vintage military grade weapons. Sheriff Tim Bukowski praised the work of the task force and said ''anytime you take these types of illegal firearms out of circulation, and out of the hands of dangerous criminals, our community is a much safer place''

States Attorney Jamie Boyd commented that ''the task force concept, where different agencies combine resources to make our communities safer, is working exactly in the fashion we had hoped for when we formed this task force. I am reviewing this case and. if appropriate. I will seek federal charges.'' The Kankakee County Major Crimes Task Force is made up of police officers from the Kankakee County Sheriffs Department, Manteno Police Department and members of the Kankakee County State Attorney's Office.
