Fall Fest 2009 at Sojourn

Share

Fall Fest, 2009 held on Saturday, September 12, at Miller Rehab Center in Kankakee, provided fun filled activities for the entire family, including patients undergoing physical therapy at the Rehab Center.

The Fest, in its 10th edition, is a fundraiser for Kankakee's Riverside Medical Center. It is held annually in the hospital's Sojourn Complex, which encompasses the Miller Rehab Center, Westwood Oaks Independent Living Center, and Butterfield Court Assisted Living facilities.

Events started in the morning with a car show in which 60 cars were entered. Later, along the walking path, booths were opened featuring festival foods such as popcorn, snow cones, ice cream bars, pulled pork sandwiches, grilled sweet corn, bottled water and lemonade.

Farmers markets provided fresh produce, fresh floral bouquets, sweet treats, homemade jams and more.

A special treat for the children was the Bounce House, where youngsters could jump to their heart's content. A fun-filled game for all ages was the ''Cake Walk;'' when the music stopped, you could be standing in a lucky spot to win a tasty treat.

Some of the Westwood Oaks residents displayed their handmade crafts, which were available for purchase.

Always a popular event for the entire family were the Frances Cordes wagon rides. Pulled by two sturdy Haflinger horses, the wagon carried visitors on short rides around the grounds.

Rounding out the fest were the musical numbers by Jeffrey Duetsch singing the classics and Elvis impersonator Jerry Dzwonkiewicz as JD Elvis, singing the old Elvis favorites, including some gospel songs. It was as though Elvis himself was there in person.

Winners of the car show were: Best Chevy - Richard Goodrich; Best Ford - Wade Rogers; and Best Dodge - Bruce and Leslie Dohm. Wayne's Choice was Joe Hayward.

A good turnout for the event, plus excellent weather, made for another successful Fall Fest event.
