Grant Park celebrates Oktoberfest 2009

Despite the threat of rain on Saturday, October 3, and cooler than usual weather, the 2009 Grant Park Oktoberfest ''Disney on Parade'' went off as planned. And Sunday turned out to be a pleasant sunny day.


Activities began on Friday night, October 2, with a beer stein contest at 7 p.m., followed by a live band - ''Small Time Dave and The Windy City Groove from 9 p.m. to midnight. Activities opened with a craft show on Saturday morning, followed by a bean bag tournament at 1 p.m. and a German dinner in the afternoon.


A lighted float parade took place on Saturday evening. Grand marshals of the Parade of light were Judy Lange and Doris Laking. A fireworks display was held at the Grant Park High School. Closing the events for Saturday night were the live band ''Black Cadillac'' at the Community Center in the park.


Sunday events began with the annual Chili Cook Off at noon. Winners were decided by the People's Taste Awards. Also, an Antique Car show was held at the park grounds on Sunday afternoon. The 2009 Oktoberfest closed with the band ''The Committee,'' at the park.


Parade of Light float winners were: first place - Grant Park Fire Department, Pirates of the Carrageen theme; second place - Anderson Family, Cinderella theme; and third place - Grant Park United Methodist Church.

Winner of the raffle for 42'' LCD TV was Cheryl Treacy.


Chili contest winners were: first place - Ralph Whipple and Bill Heldt; second place - (tied) Jaime and Solana Del Gado and Rich and Pat Dulin; and third place - Tyler Vichy.


Best in Show car show winner was a 1967 Chevy Nova owned by Andy Graziano of Schereville, Ind.


Kids coloring contest winners were: pre-school - Rylan Heldt; kindergarten - Tyler Smaga; first grade - Bill Gladkowski; second grade - Andrew Fulk; third grade - Madison Cole; fourth grade - Samuel Anker; and fifth grade - Hannah Kyllomen.
