Future Park Amphitheater to be Named Burke Amphitheater

Share

A resolution was passed at the May 18 Manteno Village Board meeting to name a new amphitheatre at the future local 67-acre park after village trustee Noel Burke and his wife, Tammy.

The Burkes recently donated a ''significant amount'' of money towards the development of the new park, trustee Dan Rudin said.

The outdoor amphitheatre will be called Burke Amphitheatre.

Citizens of Manteno previously voiced their opinions about what they would like to see at the new park, and an amphitheatre was one of their requests.

The park has not been named yet but is temporarily being called Manteno Community Park.

In June of 2008, the village and Manteno township applied for an Open Space Lands Acquisition and Development grant of $400,000 that would match $400,000 the village and township would pay. That grant was received.

The park, at the northwest corner of Ronnie Gray Drive and Maple Drive, will eventually include soccer fields, baseball fields, tennis courts, basketball courts, a practice football field, picnic shelter, playground, horseshoe pits and more.

A retention pond will be located in the southwest corner of the park, Rudin said.

The board predicts that a portion of the park will be open for citizens to use by 2011.

This year, the land will still be farmed.

At a previous village board meeting, it was noted that the park could take 10 to 15 years to be completed and will be done in several phases.

- Trustee Robin Batka noted that citizens of Manteno can now view village bills online before they are voted on by the board. They can do so on the Thursday prior to board meetings by visiting http://manteno.govoffice.com. At that site, click on ''Village Departments,'' ''Finance,'' ''Fiscal Year'' and ''Bills for Board Approval.''

- The Manteno Farmer's Market will be held in a new location this year, in the Manteno Church of the Nazarene parking lot at 698 North Locust St. The event, held from 2 to 6 p.m. every Thursday, ran out of space for vendors in the downtown area where it was usually held. The market begins June 18.

- Trustee Annette LaMore noted that the Manteno Golf Club and Learning Center is seeing an increase in business since BonVivant Country Club in Bourbonnais closed last year.

Manteno Golf Club is getting ready to plant flowers in various beds around the course. Citizens who would like to volunteer with the planting project can contact the golf course for details.

The course is at 7202 North 4000 E. Road, and the phone number is 815-468-8827.

- Years ago, the Manteno American Legion placed American flags on the graves of veterans for Memorial Day. However, not everyone obtained the flags so the Legion stopped the program.

''The Legion didn't want anyone to be left out,'' trustee LaMore said.

In an effort to obtain flags for every grave of a veteran, LaMore sought funds. ''An anonymous donor who lives in the community,'' stepped forward and gave funds to purchase flags. A total of 120 flags are now available.

Citizens who would like to place a flag on a veteran's grave can pick one up Thursday and Friday, May 21 and 22 at the Village of Manteno office located at 269 North Main St. Village hours are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

''If we run out of flags, we will try to get more,'' LaMore said.

She encourages citizens to attend the Memorial Day procession in Manteno, beginning at 10:40 a.m. and services beginning at 11 a.m. at Legion Park.
