Fire and life safety educators across the country will bring important safety messages to their communities, showing them simple ways they can stay fire smart and avoid being burned. Manteno Fire Chief Scott O'Brien shared these fire prevention points to remember: -If there is a fire - get out and stay out. Never go back into a burning home. -Don't overload extension cords or wall sockets. Extension cords are only meant to be temporary. A fire caused by a faulty electrical system or overheated cord can destroy a home and everything in it within minutes. -Cooking is the leading cause of home fires in the United States. When cooking, make sure the parent who is cooking stays in the kitchen and keeps an eye on the stove. -If a cooking fire starts, smother it with a pot lid. Never throw water on a grease fire. -Smoke alarms save lives. Make sure your residence has working alarms and the batteries are checked/replaced every six months. -Plan and practice a fire escape plan. Tracy Ahrens is a reporter for Russell Publications.
