Monee Dollars for Scholars scholarship recipients announced Share
Successful fundraising efforts permitted the Village of Monee to grant six $1,000 scholarships to local young people headed for college this fall. Four of the recipients were able to attend the May 24 village board meeting to be recognized and receive checks intended to cover some of their college costs. Those recipients attending the meeting are Jillian Crosser, headed for Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington to enter the nursing program there; Amanda Farquahr, who will attend Columbia College in Chicago as an instrumental performance major; Colin McElligott, whose plans are to study Aviation/ Human Factors at the University of Illinois in Champaign/ Urbana; and Nathan Tedeschi, who will attend the U of I in Champaign/ Urbana to study architecture. Unable to attend the board meeting, Candice Fillicetti, whose plans are to attend Illinois State University in Normal to study speech pathology and audiology, and Jon Steponvic, headed for Southern Illinois University in Carbondale to study physical therapy, were announced and will receive their checks at a later date. The board approved an expenditure of $4,300 in grant funds to upgrade the police department computer system.

After holding an executive session to discuss personnel matters, the board unanimously approved appointments to four positions. Rhonda Thompson was appointed to fill Dan Tovo's unexpired term as trustee, vacated when he was sworn-in as village president. Thompson will hold that post for the two years remaining of the term. Missy Tovo received 5-0 approval as village clerk, and Michelle Powell's appointment to the village deputy clerk position was approved by the same margin. Jennifer Gasbarro was appointed village treasurer. The four appointees were sworn in to their new positions by Village Attorney Larry Gryczewski. In other business, clerk Tovo reported her attendance at the recent conference of the International Institute of Municipal Clerks, held in Chicago. She thanked the board for the opportunity to attend the conference, where she was able to augment her education through attending seminars and taking several classes relevant to her position. She also announced that village vehicle stickers would go on sale June 1. Truck stickers are $30, passenger vehicle stickers, $25, and motorcycle vehicles are $20. Reduced fee stickers are available for handicapped individuals at $10 and for senior citizens at $5. Tom Thompson is a reporter for Russell Publications.
