Damaged gas line affects traffic Share
Monee-Manhattan Road at Interstate 57, in addition to the I-57 entrance and exit ramps, were closed for more than two hours on the morning of Tuesday, June 23, after a 4-inch high pressure gas main was damaged. A private contractor, who was working on the Monee-Manhattan bridge project, hit the gas main at the corner of Monee-Manhattan Road and Hamilton Road while digging. ''We stopped all traffic in the area to eliminate all potential ignition sources, anything that could give off a spark to cause the natural gas to explode,'' Monee Fire Chief Carl Nieland said. Additionally, some area businesses were evacuated and closed. The Monee Fire Department, with the assistance of the Monee police, stood by the entire time to monitor the air and oversee safety precautions.

The incident happened around 8:30 a.m., and by 11:30 a.m. Nicor had repaired the leak and traffic resumed, according to Nieland. There were no injuries or fire at the accident. ''All agencies worked really well together,'' Nieland said. ''It was a relatively significant leak on a 4-inch high pressure main.'' Katie Carr is a reporter for Russell Publications.
