Local Girl Scout learns life lessons Share
Christy Darabaris, a 13-year-old Girl Scout from Beecher, pushed herself to new heights to experience firsthand the culture of Costa Rica, a country recently named the ''happiest'' place in the world by the New Economics Foundation's ''Happy Planet Index.'' Darabaris recently returned from a 10-day Girl Scout trip trekking through cloud forests and rainforests, tree climbing, waterfall rappelling, rafting down class III rapids, and surfing warm water breaks in Costa Rica. The ''Happy Planet Index'' ranks nations based on human well-being and ecological efficiency. This setting provides the perfect environment for the back-to-nature focus of the Rainforest, River, and Reef course offered by the Costa Rica Rainforest Outward Bound School (CRROBS). One component of Darabaris' course involved hiking into a remote Mestizo village to learn about simple living. Darabaris reflects that the course was, ''A wonderful experience in which I met great friends and challenged myself in many ways.'' The CRROBS is one of many international organizations that offer programs designed specifically for Girl Scouts. CRROBS courses are based on experiential education for which Outward Bound is famous worldwide.
