Monee board approves church permit, nixes postage machines

Share

Though the Oct. 28 regular meeting of the Monee Village Board lasted little more than 15 minutes, the trustees did vote on three issues beyond the routine items on its agenda.

The board voted unanimously to approve an ordinance granting a special use permit for New Hope Christian Community Church at 4700 W. Court St.

The church sits on land rezoned for commercial use at the request of Seehausen's Grocery when Seehausen was negotiating with the village for agreement to develop a retail mall anchored by a much-needed grocery store in the village.

When those negotiations failed to produce the commercial development, the village - without success - sought to find another grocery store interested in developing the site.

New Hope Christian Community Church has leased from Seehausen the existing church building and the lot upon which it sits and has approached the village for a special use permit to operate as a church on commercially zoned property.

Before voting on the issue, Trustee Jim Huston wanted assurance New Hope did not have plans to expand the building or undertake any major construction projects.

He was told the only construction projects the church had planned were those needed to bring the building up to code.

With that assurance, New Hope's request for the special use permit won unanimous approval of the board.

Trustee Kevin McGill proposed a motion to cancel the village's contracts with Pitney Bowes for postage machines.

The contracts, he said, cost the village $500 quarterly with additional costs for fees and a percentage of the postage costs. In addition, according to McGill, the village is also buying stamps.

He recommended canceling the contracts in order to save the village money, saying, ''We should be looking to save money in every way we can.''

His motion received unanimous approval.

Village Attorney Larry Gryczewski presented an ordinance amending Ordinance 1508 regarding the impoundment of vehicles during traffic offenses. His recommendation received unanimous approval.

The board also voted unanimously to move the Nov. 11 meeting of the board to the preceding Monday, Nov. 9 because of the conflict with Veterans Day.

In other business, Mayor Dan Tovo informed the trustees that the village has been notified it will be receiving $875,000 from the Illinois Department of Transportation for the Cleveland Ave. realignment project, paving the way for the execution of the project.
