Village Prepares for 2010 Census Share
John Rice from the U.S. Census Bureau spoke to the village board during the April 27 committee of the whole meeting about the upcoming 2010 U.S. Census. Rice asked the village to partner with the bureau to get an accurate count of the population in Peotone. Village Administrator George Gray affirmed the need for an accurate count because much of the money the village gets is based on the village's per capita count. ''We need to make sure we get our fair share of the taxes that people are paying anyway,'' Gray said. Rice said the 2010 census questionnaire asks simple questions about residents, including name, relationship, gender, age, date of birth, race and whether the respondent owns or rents his or her home.

Census questionnaires will be mailed or delivered to households in February or March of 2010, in anticipation of the April 1, 2010 Census Day. Also during the meeting, the village accepted a bid from M & J Underground for the Garfield and Elementary School water projects. The engineer's estimate for the work was $395,465, and M & J Underground was the lowest of 11 bidders at $279,058.31. The board also approved two amplifier permits for a wedding and event at Peotone Bier Stube. The Bier Stube will have an outdoor entertainment bier garden from Sundays through Thursdays from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. and on Fridays and Saturdays from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. Mary Vieaux, of 507 S. Locust Lane, was approved for an August 8 wedding reception from 3 p.m. to midnight. Additionally, Lorrie Reynolds, of 112 W. North St., was approved to have a special use permit to establish a residence above a retail business. Reynolds plans to use the first floor as a store with goods for grade school children. The board rejected an application for a fence variance, in which Keith and Tammy Fisher, of 818 W. Corning Ave., asked for the fence to extend 44 feet up the west side of the house. Trustees voted against the variance because the new fence ordinance requires the fences to extend from the back wall of the house. Back wall is defined as the furthest protrusion of the back wall of the original construction or any addition that makes up 50 percent or more of the length of the structure. In other board news: -Bills were paid in the amount of $28,297.58. -Engineer Cortney Koning said the village has scheduled a May 6 preconstruction meeting with the Illinois Department of Transportation to discuss the Rathje Road project. -Trustees approved an ordinance to require central air conditioning in new single family or multi-family dwellings.
