New Board Sworn In

The four new village board members were sworn into office during the May 11 board meeting.


Village Clerk Donna Werner swore in new mayor Richard Duran and incumbent trustees Daniel Liberatore and Christopher Russell, as well as new trustee Christopher Forsythe.


The board meeting began with the original board members, and they voted to approve the April 7 election results.


In the election, Duran beat Wade Callahan 481 votes to 451. Werner was elected clerk over Shelley Marevka and Forsythe, Liberatore and Russell were voted into the trustee positions over Joel Werner and Richard Benson.


The new board, led by Duran, said goodbye to former mayor Steve Cross and outgoing trustee Mike Jones. Duran presented Cross and Jones with a plaque and certificate of appreciation for their service to the village.

The new board, which includes the newly elected members as well as trustees Jerry Wicker, Rich Reichert and Laura Eckman, then approved the Peotone American Legion Post 392 request to hold a Memorial Day parade on Monday, May 25. The parade will begin at the American Legion at 10 a.m. and will proceed to the cemetery.


Also during the meeting, the Peotone Relay for Life committee requested an amplifier permit for the Relay, which will be held July 31 to August 1 at the Peotone Junior High School track. The board approved the request.


The board also approved a fence variance request for Donovan Miller at 315 Westgate Drive. Miller requested that the fence come off the southeast corner of his garage as the rear wall of his house is blocked by a hot tub and concrete.


The new board members also discussed having extended hours for the village hall on Saturdays. After discussion noting that some residents have requested extended hours and that the board has already tried being open on Saturdays under previous administrations, trustees sent the request to the administrative oversight committee to be discussed.


The board also voted to approve all committee appointments.


Duran appointed Gary Hudson as chairperson of the planning and zoning committee, along with Ken Smith as a member. There is one vacancy on the committee that will be appointed during the May 26 meeting.


Klein, Thorpe and Jenkins was named village attorney; Tom Knuth as village prosecutor; Robinson Engineering as village engineer; Linden and Lenet as village planner; and George Gray as health inspector and safety officer.


Russell was named president pro temp, Eckman was named treasurer pro temp and Liberatore was named clerk pro temp. Donna Werner was named village collector; Diane Hauser as village treasurer; and Bill Mort as ESDA coordinator.


Russell, Eckman and Liberatore were named to the administrative oversight committee, with Russell being the chairperson. Liberatore, Reichert and Forsythe were named to the public works committee, with Liberatore being the chairperson. Wicker, Russell and Forsythe were named to the police and public safety committee, with Wicker being the chairperson. Reichert, Liberatore and Wicker were named to the building committee, with Reichert being the chairperson. Committee members for the economic development committee have not been named yet.
