Board considers repairs to mill

Share

Tim Thompson from the Peotone Historical Society presented the village board with suggestions regarding improvements and repairs to the Rathje Mill during the committee of the whole meeting on June 22.

Thompson recommended addressing structural and maintenance issues that would allow the deck, and possibly the third and fourth floors, to be used again.

While the mill is the village's property, Thompson said the historical society has limited funds it would possibly be able to contribute. The board decided to have Robinson Engineering, the village's engineer, do a preliminary report to get an idea of the cost involved in the renovation.

Also during the committee of the whole, residents and the board discussed putting flowering baskets in the downtown area, the status of a fence bordering the Peotone cemetery and a housing development and standing water near the Meyer Glen neighborhood. The board said it would look into addressing these issues.

Trustees also discussed the need for a stop light and speed reduction on Route 50 after a resident expressed his concerns. The board said it has been working for the last 10 years on this issue and has been doing everything it can to pressure the Illinois Department of Transportation to address the problem.

In addition, the board voted to approve Melora Bales, of 312 Conrad Street, for a home occupation permit during the regular board meeting. Home occupations are low impact businesses that are conducted in private homes in residential areas.

Melora plans to start Meals by Melora, a personal chef service where Bales will prepare healthy meals for clients in their homes. Her goal is to help people eat healthier, wholesome meals.

''Over the past two years, I have lost over 200 pounds using healthy recipes,'' Bales said. ''I'd like to share that with people.''

In addition, Mayor Richard Duran approved a proclamation stating that the village will form a Complete Count committee and support Complete Count efforts to help the U.S. Census Bureau in 2010. The village will be rewarded with funds to help it advertise the census.

Also during the meeting, the board denied M&J Underground an extension on the completion of water main construction on Garfield Street.

M&J Underground is doing the underground work on Rathje Road and planned to move the crew over to Garfield Street after its work on Rathje Road was done. Because of delays on Rathje Road, M&J Underground requested an additional 30 days to complete the project.

The board rejected the request because the additional time would cut into the school year. The school year begins on August 20 and the board feels it is important to have the work completed before that date.

Additionally, Mayor Duran reminded all village residents that residential service will not be affected by the July 4 holiday this year, as it falls on a Saturday. Residents should put out their garbage on their regular day of service the week before and after July 4.

In other board news:

-Bills were paid in the amount of $105,194.47.

-Mayor Duran reappointed David Rock to the police pension board, and the village board confirmed the appointment.

-The board approved the release of $1,600 in retainage for Davis Concrete for the 2008 sidewalk project.

-Trustees voted to approve the release of a $46,777.40 letter of credit to Westgate Manor Unit II.

-The board approved the release of a $126,861.25 letter of credit to Pearl Dodge and to waive the maintenance bond.
