Village approves amended liquor ordinance Share
Peotone officials on Monday approved an amended liquor ordinance, registration for a new pizza restaurant, a variance for a residential fence, and a Girl Scout food collection to benefit Helping Hands Food Pantry. The liquor license ordinance was for ''technical corrections,'' according to Village Administrator George Gray. ''Our (existing) ordinance states whenever an existing license expires and is not renewed or becomes 'open' for any other reason, the total number of licenses available, and the number of licenses in that classification is automatically reduced by one,'' Gray explained. ''This action prevents having 'open' licenses. ''However, as we also state a specific number of licenses in the code, we need to change the actual numbers listed in the code to conform to those automatically adjusted.

''This amendment is a housekeeping matter. This amendment changes the total number of licenses and the number of licenses per class to match the automatic reductions.'' But, the revised ordinance did not include a slot for the liquor license being sought Monday night for the new Pizzetta's Pizza at 422 S. Governors Highway. The new restaurant is owned by Peotone School Board member Adam Baumgartner, who also owns the Subway sandwich shop in town. According to Baumgartner's application for business registration, Pizzetta's Pizza will be open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and will include delivery service. Baumgartner said he plans to open the restaurant, ''hopefully, on November 1.'' Meanwhile, the fence variance was approved for the home at 715 Hickory Street. George Gray explained that the applicant wanted to ''extend the fence to a location on the rear wall closer to the front of the property than code would permit. The purpose of this request is to enclose the air conditioner, utility meters and sump pump discharge.'' In addition, the homeowner asked to be permitted to ''allow utility pedestals located at the rear corner of the lot to remain outside the fence. Code requires fences extend to the property line.'' Gray said, after the meeting, that the homeowner did not explain why he wanted to exclude the utility pedestals, but added that it is a common request. Also at the meeting, the board OK'd the Girl Scouts' request for permission to canvass the village on Saturday, October 24, seeking non-perishable food for Helping Hands Food Pantry. Scouts are from the Peotone, Green Garden and Wilton Center Service Unit of Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana. Food will be collected from 9:30 a.m. to noon. Items may be left by the front door of homes. Scouts also will ring doorbells and ask for donations of canned goods. The collection is a service project the Scouts have done for many years on behalf of the food pantry. In addition, the Girl Scouts will continue their sale of candy and nuts through October 18. They will sell the items until 7 p.m. weekdays and only from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday, with no Sunday sales. In January, Scouts will sell cookies door-to-door, and, in January and February, will have cookie booth sales. Russell Publications prints several community newspapers each week, serving Will, Kankakee and Cook counties.
