Dodge Ball Tournament to help raise funds for Post Prom Share
A Dodge Ball Tournament on November 14 at Peotone High School will help raise funds to keep Peotone Post Prom ''going strong.'' The new fundraising event will include 16 teams, high school age and up, and organizers are looking for alumni, parents, faculty and business owners who might want to participate. Post Prom activities will benefit, according to Marsha Hockenberry, chairman of the tournament. ''Post Prom is the event we have at the high school after the prom,'' she explained. ''In recent years, we have kept over 250 kids entertained, fed and safe. Post Prom is 24 years old and we want to keep it going strong. We were thinking that (the Dodge Ball Tournament) would be a great way to make money, have fun and get the community involved. We are so lucky to have the support of our community and our alumni.'' The idea for the tournament took shape a year ago, Hockenberry said, when ''several of my friends from college were brainstorming about successful fundraisers at their schools.

''Given the economy, we are all feeling the crunch,'' she added. When someone mentioned Dodge Ball Tournaments, the group took notice and immediately headed to school officials for approval. ''The tournament will be made up of 16 teams, high school students and older. We are hoping to see teams from the community, such as alumni, parents, faculty, business people and others. ''We hope teams will pick themes and really get into it; however, please remember it is a school event and everything should be school-appropriate and in good taste.'' Hockenberry noted that tournament play ''will be your standard Dodge Ball game, which will last six minutes, unless there is a winner before that. It will be double-elimination, so teams will play more than once. Teams will have six members playing and two alternates.'' Teams will be listed on the roster only after all members' waiver forms and entrance money is received. Cost is $10 per player. Team packets will be accepted beginning October 21 during lunch periods at the high school. No team packets may be turned in at the school office. Teams whose members are not high school students may return their packets by mail or in person at Hockenberry's residence at 1013 Teal Avenue in Peotone. Hockenberry said waivers for teams - and more information, if needed - now are available in the high school office, or by emailing (mhockenberry2@aol.com, Lora Dittman at ditt488@iswan.net, or Tami David at mtdavid88@yahoo.com). ''This is my fourth year helping with Post Prom, and we would like to continue to grow this event,'' Hockenberry said. ''I have heard students say that they had more fun at Post Prom than they did at the prom. That being said, we hope to capitalize on those great memories and keep it going for the next generation of kids.'' Admission to the event, which begins at 2:30 p.m., will be $3 per person and concessions will be available for purchase. All proceeds will go to Post Prom. Those who cannot attend or participate but who want to make a cash donation may do so by contacting the committee members at the emails listed above.
