At the August 11 Crete Village Board meeting, Library Board President Pat Kelly reported that the library had set an all-time circulation record for the month of July. Circulation exceeded 15,000 items.
Subsequent conversation with Jane Schulten, library administrator, pegged the July 2005 circulation at 9,500; and July 2007 at 12,000. The recently approved referendum was not only timely, but needed.
Expanded outreach efforts, along with the sluggish economy and soaring gasoline prices, have highlighted the value of the library as a community resource for all ages. The library held one Teacher Appreciation Open House on August 15 and will hold another on August 22. There will be tours, demonstrations, refreshments, goodies and raffles.
Other updates from the board meeting included the December 2008 completion of the village's new web site. Public Works has done an excellent job of beautifying the village this summer.
The lowest bid was accepted for the half-mile water and sewer extension to Burrville Road and State Street. This TIF funded work will enhance commercial and industrial development in this area.
