Crete Library Sets New Record
» Cornell Hudson - Crete Record - 08.21.08

At the August 11 Crete Village Board meeting, Library Board President Pat Kelly reported that the library had set an all-time circulation record for the month of July. Circulation exceeded 15,000 items.

Subsequent conversation with Jane Schulten, library administrator, pegged the July 2005 circulation at 9,500; and July 2007 at 12,000. The recently approved referendum was not only timely, but needed.

Expanded outreach efforts, along with the sluggish economy and soaring gasoline prices, have highlighted the value of the library as a community resource for all ages. The library held one Teacher Appreciation Open House on August 15 and will hold another on August 22. There will be tours, demonstrations, refreshments, goodies and raffles.

Other updates from the board meeting included the December 2008 completion of the village's new web site. Public Works has done an excellent job of beautifying the village this summer.

The lowest bid was accepted for the half-mile water and sewer extension to Burrville Road and State Street. This TIF funded work will enhance commercial and industrial development in this area.

Crete-Monee School District 201's Balmoral School annexation will be discussed at an upcoming board meeting. The school is on a well-and-septic system. This annexation puts the property in position for city water and sewer when they become available near the school.

The board agreed to provide some fee and license relief to the newly re-opened Crete Family Fun Center. A long term, fair solution is needed for businesses that require multiple licenses.

Village President Michael Einhorn visited a CenterPoint Properties Inter-Modal facility in Joliet. The ambient air quality sampling reveals that pollution is less than 10 percent of the allowable maximum. Pollution claims for the Crete Inter-Modal facility are not substantiated with data from the Joliet facility. CenterPoint Properties will give the board an update on September 15.

Crete Park District's Park-A-Palooza is scheduled for Heritage Park on September 6 between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. Last year's festival was such a success that it is now an annual affair. There will be a wide variety of activities and display of village vehicles.

Trustee Sue Rossi was recognized by the board for her research and writings on the foreclosure issue. Her involvement and impact has made it to Washington, D.C. She recently presented a seminar on this timely, often debated and complicated issue.
