Village Employees Ignoring Village Stickers
» Cornell Hudson - Steger News - August 28, 2008

Steger Village President Louis Sherman rarely gets angry. His sense of fairness and calm temperament has contributed a lot to his 30-plus years as mayor.

But, some village employees recently got a lesson in not mistaking kindness for weakness. Mayor Sherman found out that there were some village employees ignoring the requirement of purchasing village stickers for their vehicles and pets.

After checking the village parking lot, the mayor confronted these employees with a strong piece of advice. They were advised to immediately purchase a village sticker or subject themselves to disciplinary action up to and including dismissal. Everyone who was confronted complied.

To quote Mayor Sherman: "How can the police ticket someone for not having a village sticker, when they themselves do not have a sticker? This flagrant disregard for ordinances and disrespect of village residents will not be sanctioned or tolerated."

Most village employees and officials who live in town abide by the sticker ordinance. With the current sluggish economy, village revenue from all sources is very important. Residents who bought stickers voluntarily and on time could surely find another use for their sticker money.

At $10 per sticker (one dollar for seniors), Steger stickers have got to be one of the best bargains in the southland. These prices are the same as they were when Mayor Sherman took office and he has no plans to raise them.

The August 18 village board meeting covered the following:

-Gallagher Asphalt requested an increase of $22.42 per ton for liquid asphalt, raising the contract price from $49.90 to $72.32 per ton, effective August 18. Gallagher Asphalt says the 45% increase is due to a significant increase in the price of liquid asphalt. The board voted to table this item.

-Also tabled was a letter from Fifth Third Bank notifying the village that it did not intend to renew the Letter of Credit for the Scrementi Southtown Commons property. This $34,580 Letter of Credit will expire on December 12.

-Ye Olde 5 Loaves Restaurant at 34 East 34 Street was granted a zoning variance to sell beer and wine on the premises.

-The village will request bids for an emergency generator for the new Fire Department headquarters. A five-year loan at 4.06 percent will be taken out with First United Bank to purchase a new Fire Department ambulance.

-Everyone was reminded to come out for the annual Community Days at Veteran's Park on August 23 and 24.

-Steger has several community events throughout the year and something for everyone. There is the annual garage sale. Then, the Steger Day of Prayer is held for all churches and denominations. Next is the Dixie Dash, during which Steger serves lunch to all participants and onlookers in the K-Mart parking lot.

The Steger Summer Faire is held for two days at the end of June. Steger Community Days are two days of fun for everyone. It includes amusement rides, dancing, bean bag tournament, car show, fireworks and a parade.

The highlight of September's Oktoberfest is the Chili Kookin' Kontest. The annual Lighted Trees on the Boulevard runs from after Thanksgiving to after the New Year. New for 2008 is the Saturday Farmer's Market in the K-Mart parking lot, from 3 to 6 p.m., starting September 6.

The Steger-South Chicago Heights Library, Friends of the Library, the Village of Steger, Chamber of Commerce, Steger Kiwanis, Steger Memorial Chapel and First United Bank will sponsor a "Movie in the Park" on Friday, September 5, at 8 p.m. in Veterans Park. The feature is "The Bee Movie," and the movie and popcorn are free.

All these events are a collaboration of village officials, employees, fire department, police department, Emergency Service Disaster Agency, Public Works, Chamber of Commerce, local businesses and civic clubs.

In observance of Labor Day, September 1, there will not be a village board meeting. Village hall will be closed August 30 and September 1.
