Leaf Collection Guidelines Set
» Katie Carr - Peotone Vedette - August 28, 2008

The Peotone Village Board voted to approve the guidelines for the new leaf collection policy, as suggested by the Public Works Committee, at the Aug. 25 board meeting.

The leaf program will run the week of Oct. 13 through the week of Dec. 1. Leaves and mulch should be left in the parkway (the area between the sidewalk and street) by 6 a.m. Monday and will be collected throughout the week.

No branches, rocks, litter or other materials should be mixed with the leaves, as they pose hazards to workers and equipment. Additionally, the leaves should not be in the street and should be away from storm drains, mailboxes, utility poles and parked cars. The board mentioned that on busy weeks it could take the entire week to collect the leaves throughout town.

To clarify the Aug. 14 village board report, the leaf collection fee of $13.50 will be issued to community members once a year, in the third quarter water bill. This fee goes toward the purchase the equipment and to fund maintenance and operations of the program.

The board also discussed the problem of cigarette butts downtown after the prohibition of smoking in public buildings. There was a letter sent out to area businesses holding liquor licenses and to those that have patrons who smoke just outside the premises. The letter said the police will be monitoring the litter problem.

The board mentioned that people smoking outside of businesses are not allowed to have alcohol with them, and the person and business responsible will be dealt with.

There have also been complaints from community members about off-color comments being made to passersby by people congregating outside downtown businesses. The board wanted to notify the community that this is unacceptable and anyone experiencing this should report it to the police.

The board wanted the community to know it is working to tighten rules about solicitors, so if anyone in the community is approached by a solicitor at their home and they feel uncomfortable, please report the incident to the police.

Additionally, the board previously surveyed area municipalities to compare salaries and job duties of board members. The results showed the salaries were widely varied and the board decided to take no action in updating the Peotone board's salaries.

The board also voted to approve the new U.S. Department of Transportation guidelines for drug testing for commercial drivers licenses (CDL). The amendments hope to help detect the use of materials that cover up drug use in tests.
