Township Enters Recycling Program
» Karen Haave - Frankfort Neue Press - September 4, 2008

Old computers, burned-out monitors, disfunctional printers and the like will find a new home - and maybe a new life - with Frankfort Township's fledgling electronics recycling program.

Township officials last week approved an agreement with Cloud Blue for the program, which would be held twice a year at the Frankfort Township Highway Department on LaPorte Road in Mokena.

The township will pay Cloud Blue 16 cents per pound of electronics collected, including cell phones and televisions.

The first electronics recycling event will be held on Saturday, October 11.

Frankfort Township Supervisor Jim Moustis said he believes that county and state grants will easily cover the cost.

In addition, the township receives some $1,500 a year from area refuse pick-up services, which also will help defray costs.

Moustis said he felt the program is necessary, in light of landfill fill-ups and new information that suggests electronics contain hazardous materials that can pollute the environment.

"Some of these things contain lead," the supervisor noted, "and a lot of people don't know what to do with them. The county does have electronics recycling programs, but they are always held in communities (involving a long drive).

People don't want to drive that far because gas is so expensive. But I think that if we had a local program, people would participate. "I'd like to be able to do it twice a year," he added.

"If you do it on a regular basis, people will save their old computers and TVs and bring them in."

Moustis said Cloud Blue will harvest useable parts from the old electronics.

"But they also recondition a lot of them. They are responsible for removing everything hazardous. They are very reputable, so I'm sure they will do that."

According to the agreement, Cloud Blue will provide CDL drivers to transport trucks to the collection event site; labor for the event; a hospitality area for Frankfort Township volunteers; all material-handling equipment and supplies; same-day removal and clean-up; EPA-compliant processing of all equipment; follow-up recap report of collected equipment, following Will County solid waste-reporting procedures; and a certificate of EPA-compliant recycling.

Frankfort Township will assume responsibility for the event site and marketing of the event.
