Manhattan Police Put Out Fire Department's Flame
» Mary Bernhard - Manhattan American - September 4, 2008

Dan Forsythe of the Manhattan Fire Department threw down a challenge two months ago to the newly hired Manhattan Police Chief Bill Fitzgerald, two days into his job, challenging him to put a team together.

"My second day on the job as chief, Forsythe asked if I was going to be able to field a team," Fitzgerald said. "I took that to heart."

The fire department t-shirts stating "If you can't handle the heat - become a cop" did not shake the confidence of the police department.

The "guns and hoses" game held Saturday at Central Park proved to be exciting. Last year's event and fund raiser, the police had to recruit fireman to get enough players on the team. This year the "cops" showed up to play.

After radio host of FM 100.7, "Freak," threw out the first pitch the police took a slight lead, scoring three runs in the first inning while the fire department answered back with only two.

Thanks to a nice play at second base and some errors on the police department's part, the fire department looked like it was going to run away with four runs to the police department's zero.

Inning three however, the police showed what they were made of scoring 14 points while the fire department could only put one across the plate.

In the fourth inning, it looked like the fire department made a valiant effort to catch up scoring three to the police department's one. The police answered right back in the fifth, scoring three to the fire department's zero, with an excellent double play extinguishing fire department's efforts.

The final score was 24 for the Manhattan Police Department and 13 Manhattan Fire Department.

Seeing only one actual Manhattan police officer on the field and two elected officials for the police department, when asked where his players came from, Fitzgerald joked, "They came from the home. Didn't you see the bus? I have to have them back by six though."

After the game Fitzgerald disclosed there were four Joliet police officers and several of his son-in-law's friends who play softball. Rumor had it there was also a smattering of players from Joliet Junior College but could not be confirmed. Regardless, Chief Fitzgerald did prove he can field a team.

Funds raised from the game will go to the police department for police equipment. Last year's donations helped the fire department buy new CPR mannequins and an AED trainer.

The 50/50 pot raised over $250, while a raffle to ride a fire engine in the Fun Day Parade raised just under $50.

Jim Curren of Manhattan won the 50/50 and Kim Bernhard had the privilege of riding on the fire engine during the Fun Day parade.
