Rain Sets Chicago Record, Causes Manteno Flooding
» Katie Carr - Manteno News - 09.18.08

The Village of Manteno is scrambling to recover from the past weekend's flooding. Between Friday and Sunday, Manteno received about eight inches of rain, a 100-year flood that closed down many streets across town.

"There was just no where for the rain to go," Superintendent of Public Works Brian O'Keefe said.

O'Keefe added that typically in storm conditions, the water treatment plant processes 3.6 million gallons of water, but between Friday and Sunday it processed 8.6 million gallons. This has led to sewer backups into some area basements.

The village has a sewer lining project in place to help solve this problem in the future and is working on two different ways to divert more water to other areas.

"All three combined should eliminate problems like this by next summer completely," O'Keefe said.

He added that the sewer and street workers have been working continuously to help fix the problems, and everything possible is being done to address the situation.

The board also encouraged residents not to play in the flooded water, to obey traffic signs if a road is closed and to drive slowly through flooded areas in hopes of making as little wake as possible.

In other current news, the village notified residents that Main St., from Division St. to Third St., will be closed for Oktoberfest beginning Thursday afternoon on Sept. 18 until Sunday night, Sept. 21. However, S. Main St. will be open for the Farmer's Market, which is every Thursday from 2-6 p.m., ending on Oct. 9.

The village is also beginning to prepare for the snow and ice winter brings. This year, salt will be less available throughout the nation after last year's harsh winter. Additionally, the price has gone up from $44.79 per ton to $107.27 per ton for Manteno. To address this problem, the villages hopes to clean the roads better and concentrate salt on intersections and curves.

Last year, the village used 511 tons of salt, an unusually large amount, but are limiting themselves to 275 tons this year. Over the last five years, the village has averaged 372 tons per year, with a low at 220 tons. Public works is also looking into other alternatives if the salt supply should run low.

In other board news:

- A request by the Manteno High School FFA to sell soy candles and citrus fruit as a fund raiser was approved.

- A request by the Manteno High School sophomore class to sell cheese and sausage as a fund raiser was approved.

- The board is working to place lights on Illinois Route 50 and crews will begin staking out light poles this week. The project should be completed by the end of the year.

- A ordinance was passed granting a variance for driveway width requirements and minimum side yard setback for 287 S. Hickory St.

- Bills were paid in the amount of $105,589.45, including $15,407.09 in TIF bills.
