Annexation is a Driving Issue
» Terry Gatlin - Beecher Herald - 09.18.08

During the recent village board meeting, Beecher Village President Paul Lohmann shared a letter to be sent to Crete Village President Mike Einhorn regarding the dispute on village boundaries.

According to his letter, Beecher received a letter from the Illinois Environmental Agency (IEPA) on July 5. The letter from the IEPA directs the Villages of Beecher, Crete and someone from the Thorn Creek Sanitary District to have a meeting regarding the two villages' overlapping FPA issues.

According to Lohmann's letter to Einhorn, Beecher Village Administrator Bob Barber claims to have talked to Crete Village Administrator Tom Durkin about a meeting, but one has not yet been scheduled.

"Whether or not we agree to disagree on this issue after the meeting is not important," wrote Lohmann. "I do not want to offend anyone at the IEPA by stating that we did not even try to meet as they instructed us to do."

One of the options the village board has considered is a mutual agreement between Beecher, Crete and Thorn Creek to withdraw the FPA applications in the contested or overlapped area and seek some type of assurance from the IEPA that an FPA will not be granted in this area until the land is first annexed to either Beecher or Crete.

Such annexation will be the driving factor in the development of the property and not which agency is providing the sewer.

Such an agreement could create a jagged-edged boundary between Beecher and Crete. "So be it," wrote Lohmann.

Whatever happens in the future, Lohmann seems to think that the ball has been thrown back to Crete.

"Please let me know when and where you would like to meet, and I will be there," challenged Lohmann.

Copies of Lohmann's letter were sent to Einhorn, Durkin and the Thorn Creek Sanitary District.
