Summer Weather Leads to Great Fall Fest
» Anita Eason - Manteno News - September 25, 2008

Weather for Oktoberfest can often be unpredictable, with rain and unseasonably cold days putting a damper on the fun; however, this year's 11th annual Oktoberfest brought four beautiful sunny days.

"With last year's Oktoberfest being the big success that it was, we never dreamed we could surpass that. But, with all the great weather and community participation, we had a 10-30 percent increase in Oktoberfest events," said co-chairperson Paula Hampton of Municipal Bank.

Saturday night's parade included Jeff Jarvis, Manteno's Citizen of the Year, and members of the American Legion Post 755, Manteno's Mayor Tim Nugent, the Manteno Police and Fire Departments, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, and a variety of area businesses and school and community groups.

Dralle Chevrolet won first place for "Best Float." Wood Farms came in second, and third went to Get Wet Pools. The People's Choice Award was given to Fuse Salon in Manteno.

Vulcan Material's Kids Corner was once again a big hit and featured a fossil hunt in Manteno's largest sandbox, a chance to make your own pet rock, balloons for the kids and a rock climbing wall. Over 1,300 people took a guided tour for a behind-the-scenes look at the Vulcan quarry on Saturday and Sunday.

New to the fest this year was a pet parade with great participation Ð 75 pets including cats, dogs, ferrets, snakes and a mini horse.

Bean bag tournaments were well-attended again this year. Winners in the double elimination tournament were: First place-Jimmy Matsko and Kevin Watson; second place-Gina Lee and Pauline Burkhart; and third place-Wendell Cyr and David St. Peter.

Also new to the fest this year was the Manteno Oktoberfest Run for Education on Sunday, Sept. 21. Close to 300 runner/walkers and 70 volunteers helped to make this event a success. Cody McCullough, a 2007 Manteno High School graduate, was the first place overall winner in the running division with a time of 16:19.

The four-day fest offered fun carnival rides for the kids and entertainment for all ages with martial arts presentations, gospel singing, dancers, live band entertainment, a car show and a Strongman Performance.

The carnival has pulled away, tents are coming down and Main Street is almost back to pre-fest conditions after a wonderful and memorable Oktoberfest 2008. However, volunteers for this event do not take a break; They begin planning right away with monthly meetings to prepare for next year's fest. Hampton said, "An event of this magnitude would not be possible without the commitment and dedication of the volunteers, our sponsors, the Village of Manteno Streets and Alleys Dept. and the Manteno Police Dept."
