When the Rains Came
» Cornell Hudson - Steger News - September 25, 2008

Recent record setting rains brought out the best in Steger first responders and demonstrated how important teamwork and collaborative efforts are. Basements were flooded and many streets became impassable. The coordinated work of Public Works, Fire, Police and Emergency Service Disaster Agency (ESDA) working all weekend eased the wrath caused by Mother Nature.

From blocking flooded streets to assisting stranded motorist to comforting concerned residents, emergency personnel sprang into action. Public Works Superintendent Bill Cox says this was the worst flooding that he had ever seen in Steger. Superintendent Cox played on many flooded fields years ago as a child.

Many first responders were amazed at the number of people who drove around or over barricades, only to get stuck in the water and need a tow to get out.

Steger's first Fall Festival/Farmers Market was rained on, but not rained out. Of the 18 vendors signed up to participate, 10 showed up. Many of those 10 said they would return the following week

Mayor Lou Sherman's 18th annual Golf Outing was a success in spite of the rain. There were 99 golfers and 130 attended the dinner afterwards at Lincolnshire County Club in Crete.

The Lake Hills Subdivision reported on a few weeks ago because residents were upset that the lake was empty, saw the situation reversed: recent rains have filled the lake to capacity.

At the September 15 village board meeting, Mayor Sherman recognized and thanked the first responders for their work following the rainstorms. Other items from the board meeting:

-The Board turned down a request from Gallagher Asphalt seeking a price increase due to the increase in asphalt materials. The bid submitted by Gallagher was supposed to be good for one year.

-Awarded Keith's Power Equipment the contract to supply a 75-kilowatt emergency generator for the fire station at a cost of $30,053.95.

-Awarded DME Access the contract for a wheel chair lift for the fire station at a cost of $21,162.

-Fire Chief Al Martinez and Assistant Chief Jeff Roesner are driving the new ambulance back from the manufacturer.
