Lincoln-Way East continues its perfect way
» Jim Baranski - New Lenox Community Reporter - 10.02.08

On September 26, Lincoln-Way East kept intact two perfect records. First, the Griffins remained unbeaten for the 2008 campaign with a 42-14 win over archrival Lincoln-Way Central. Also, East continues its total dominance over Central on the football field: the Griffins have never lost to the Knights on the varsity level.

The Griffins (5-0, 1-0) wasted no time getting on the boards as East scored in its first two possessions. Griffin quarterback Spencer Stanek fired touchdown passes of 30 and 33 yards to Eric Stawicki.

Still in the first quarter, the Griffins increased their lead. Jay Corbett blocked a punt and then recovered the pigskin in the end zone for another six-pointer. Thus, East enjoyed a 21-0 advantage in the Southwest Suburban Blue opener.

After a Central touchdown on a 20-yard run by Chase Davis, the Griffins retaliated with two more scores before the end of the first half. Stanek hit Kevin Starke for a nine-yard touchdown, and then Starke ran in from the 1 to increase East's halftime margin to 35-7.

In the third quarter, the Knights (4-1, 0-1) tallied their second touchdown when quarterback Kyle Plarski hit paydirt on a two-yard run. Starke finished with the hat trick, scoring his third touchdown on a one-yard run to put the Griffins up 42-14.

For the Griffins, Stanek finished the evening hitting a sizzling 14 of 15 passes for 217 yards and three touchdowns. Sawicki had four catches for 72 yards. Starke rushed 72 yards on eight carries. In all, the Griffin offense totaled 385 yards.

"My offensive line gave me great protection," Stanek said. "I did not have any pressure on the touchdown passes.

Davis topped the Central offense with 95 yards on 16 totes.

On October 3, the Griffins will travel to Lockport to face the 3-2 Porters. The Knights will be at home against unbeaten Bolingbrook.
