Steger Chamber Supports ESDA
» Barb Dorman - Steger News - 10.02.08

Through a donation from the Steger Chamber of Commerce, the Steger ESDA (Emergency Services and Disaster Agency) was able recently to purchase 16 tailored, state-of-the-art, high coverage protection design bullet proof vests for the tactical law enforcement personnel.

These tailor made vests use the newest technology to ensure the highest protection with optimum fit and comfort. Officer's mobility is improved; they stay cooler and can carry more equipment.

These vests have versatile utility pouches that are compatible with tactical equipment and are fully adjustable. The vests are identical as to where the expandable baton, handcuffs, flash light, pepper spray, radio and other needed items are to be carried. They enable the officers to keep less weight on their waist and less stress on their backs.

The vests were bought purely as a safety precaution because the Steger ESDA officers work closer with the public than any other ESDA team. Each officer has to have over 200 hours of educational training every year.

ESDA members are trained in courses including: first responder, weather spotting, search and rescue, hazardous materials, dispatch, emergency lighting, CPR, defensive tactics, radiological incidents and ground search and rescue.

CERT-Community Emergency Response Team involves disaster preparedness, fire suppression, team organization, terrorism organization, terrorism module, light urban search and rescue, medical principles and treatment and disaster psychology.

NIMS is a system mandated by Homeland Security Presidential Directive (HSPD) 5 that provides a consistent nationwide approach for federal, state, local and tribal governments; the private-sector and nongovernmental organizations to work effectively and efficiently together to prepare for, respond to and recover from domestic incidents, regardless of cause, size or complexity.

Steger ESDA prepares for:

-Natural events including tornados, floods, earthquake and winter storms/blizzards.

-Biological events including Asian flu, anthrax and other bio-chemical hazards.

-Man-made events including bombing, plane crash, and riots.

-Chemical events including a train crash with chemical leak or gasoline tankers that overturn.

Steger ESDA is a member of "SMART" (Suburban Mutual Assistance Response Team), a 38-member suburban ESDA association in Cook and Will counties. SMART is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the lives and the property of the citizens within its boundaries and the enhancement of ESDA programs through mutual aid to its jurisdictional members.

Through on-going coordination, each jurisdiction belongs to the SMART organization and has hundreds of professional volunteers trained in various specialized fields on call if local resources are already in use. Besides manpower, over 100 pieces of equipment are on standby to respond and assist in all cases of emergencies or disasters.

Steger ESDA Coordinator Roger Mumford has been president of "SMART" for the past 28 years and works with these 38 other jurisdictions. The strength of ESDA lies in the hard work and dedication of the volunteers who make up the local organizations.

By bolstering the strength of the local unit through funding, equipment, acquisitions, educational programs and day to day professional guidance, the citizens of Northeast Illinois are insured the fastest, most efficient response to emergencies by volunteers who make up these local organizations and who are critical to its services.
