Fire district Focuses on Home Safety
» Katie Carr - Manteno News - October 16, 2008

The Manteno Community Fire Protection District will hold its open house on Sunday, Oct. 26, from 1-3 p.m. at Station No. 1. The event will center around the theme of "Safety in the Home," where area organizations will promote useful ways to keep homes safe.

"Fire prevention in the home is something that I think will help our citizens and protect them," Fire Chief Scott O'Brien said. "That's why it's important to get the message out and let them know that a lot of accidents in the home can be prevented."

The public of all ages is invited to visit the fire station, view the fire equipment and try on firefighters' gear. Snacks and refreshments will also be available.

In addition, the Manteno police will be providing bicycle registration and the Kankakee County Sheriff's Office will be offering child fingerprinting. Nicor will be teaching about natural gas safety in the home and Provena St. Mary's will discuss first aid. Finally, the Illinois State Police will offer assistance with child safety seats.

The open house caps off the annual Fire Prevention Week, which was Oct. 6-10. During this week, firefighters talked to children in Manteno schools about cooking, escape plans, electricity in the home and what to do in the event of a fire.
