Lincoln-Way Central Returns to Winning Ways
» Russell News Service - New Lenox Community Reporter - 10.23.08

After dropping its last three games, Lincoln-Way Central captured its first SouthWest Blue win October 17, toppling Lockport 34-7. It was the Knights first conference win. However, overall, Central is now 5-3 and eligible for the state football playoffs.

Reserve fullback John Mahoney was the star of the evening. Having just a handful of carries in the prior seven games, Mahoney exploded for 207 yards and three touchdowns on just nine totes.

"I never expected a night like this," Mahoney exclaimed. "Hopefully, we can get some momentum going into the playoffs."

With the score knotted at 7-7 at the intermission, Mahoney opened the second half with a 62-yard scoring burst. Moments later, Pete Damiani had an interception for the Knights, and Mahoney then added a 19-yard touchdown run. Mahoney capped his evening as he rambled 85 yards for another six-pointer late in the fourth quarter, icing the contest.

Chase Davis also scored two touchdowns for the Knights. Late in the third quarter, Davis rushed for a 7-yard score. In the first half, Kyle Plarski (6 of 9, 104) hooked up with Davis for a 26-yard touchdown. Scott Secor kicked four extra points.

After a second-quarter Lockport touchdown, the Knights defense put the pressure on the Porters. In the second half, the Knights forced five turnovers including two interceptions by Mike Krull.

The Knights will finish the regular season at Joliet on October 24. The Steelmen have won just once in eight outings so the Knights will have an opportunity for a sixth win and clinch that playoff spot.
