Spartans Win Pair

In spite the snow, Marian Catholic made the trip to Iowa on February 1 to play in the Wendy's Classic at Loras College in Dubuque. After the slow start, the Spartans rallied to hand Dubuque Senior its first loss of the season 68-61.

Dubuque jumped ahead 19-12 after the first period. However, the Spartans retaliated with a 17-3 second stanza run to provide a lead they would never relinquish. At the half, Marian had a 36-31 lead.

The Spartans proved that they would handle a tall team as the 14-1 Dubuque started with four players 6-foot-5 or taller.

Marian kept Dubuque at bay with some hot free throw shooting hitting 21-of-24, which included 14-of16 in the final quarter.

Tyler Ulis topped the Spartans with 22 points along with nine assists and three steals. Meanwhile, the speedy Ki-Jana Crawford tossed in 18 points, and the 5-foot-8 senior topped Spartans in rebounds with six and steals with five.

Josh Cohn had 12 points, while Terrone Parham tallied eight. John Oliver added six points and three rebounds.

The day before, the Spartans took care of business in the East Suburban Catholic as Marian downed Marist 57-44. The Spartans are now 4-0 in conference.

Up 34-21 at the intermission, Marian opened the third quarter with an 11-0 run to seal up the win. Up 51-27 after three, Spartan coach Mike Taylor was able to clear the bench.

It was also a big night for two Spartans. Prior to the contest, Marian retired the jersey of Dennis Kelly, who now plays for the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFL. Then in the first quarter, Ulis scored his 2000th point for the Spartans, as Ulis was recently named to the McDonald's All-American team, just one of 24 players chosen throughout the nation.

Cohn topped Marian with 16 points as he connected on four treys. Ulis ended the evening with 15 points along with four assists and three steals. Xavier Parker added eight points. Parham grabbed six rebounds.

The Spartans (17-2) will travel to Notre Dame on February 7 for an ESCC game, and then Marian will host Providence Catholic on February 11 at 7 p.m.
