Peotone Rallies Past Coal City

For Peotone, the boys basketball has been a rollercoaster, but its past week, the Blue Devils have soaring uphill. After a win over Manteno, the Blue Devil beat a tough non-conference Shepard. Then, Peotone capped the week with come from behind victory at Coal City on February 14.

Trailing 24-9 at the half, it did not look good for the Blue Devils. However rather then packed it in, the Blue Devils came out after intermission with renewed energy.

In the end, Peotone edged the Coaler 44-42 in the Interstate Eight battle. The win gave the Blue Devils overall mark of 13-11, and they are 6-3 in the I-8, while Coal City drops to 16-6 and 5-3.

"Making a couple of simple offensive adjustments and moving to our zone press, momentum started to build in our favor," Peotone coach Scott Maupin said.

Peotone put 20 points on the board in the third quarter, and the Blue Devils cut the cap to 36-29.

The fourth period was all Peotone. Finally after a defensive board by Kale Maupin, Scott Gasik delivered the go-ahead basket putting the Blue Devils up for the first time in the game with a 43-42 advantage with 42 seconds left.

The Blue Devils, who held the Coaler to six points in the final eight minutes, had another defensive stop. Then Brandon Wenzel added a charity toss.

"This was a solid win on the road in league play," Maupin said. "Our kids fought for 32-minutes and really matured as a team as the game progressed. We struggled terribly shooting the ball in the first half, but our forte is defense and rebounding. Without a doubt, that kept us in the game until we started shooing better.

I am really proud of the kids for battling through the storm and prevailing."

Hitting 3-of-5 from long range, Gasik led the Blue Devils with 13 points. Josh Vincent tallied 10 points and grabbed a game-high five rebounds. Senior Trever Zeibert added 8 points and five boards as well.

On February 11, the Blue Devils again used a strong second half to beat Shepard 46-44.

The Blue Devils were down 25-19 at the half. Using an 8-0, the Blue Devils led after three 32-29.

However, the fourth quarter was a nail-biter. With two minutes left, Wenzel snapped a 41-41 tie as he nailed a three-pointer from the left wing. Astro Jacob Littleton countered with a trey knotting the game at 44 inside of 20 seconds.

In the end, Peotone had the ball with 3.8 seconds remaining. On a well-executed play a pass from Andrew Marganski to the right corner found Wenzel. Wenzel quickly fired the ball to Vincent for the winning basket with 1.3 seconds remaining.

Vincent topped the Blue Devils with 23 points and hauled down seven boards. Gasik finished with 13 points and five boards, while Wenzel had eight points and four rebounds.

Peotone now has won three straight wins all by two points.

The Blue Devils will host Lisle on senior night on February 21 in I-8 play.
