Scholarships Available to PHS College-Bound Seniors

Barbara Arnold/Steen/Aussprung Memorial Student-Athlete Scholarship is being offered to one male and one female student-athlete who has received at least one varsity letter in a Peotone High School Athletic Sport or who is participating in a spring sport and is due to receive a varsity letter during that sport. To apply, the senior must be continuing his/her education in the fall and have a 3.0 cumulative GPA.

The Sean Berkley Foundation offers the one-time Sean Patrick Berkley Memorial Scholarship to a student who exemplifies similar character traits and values as Sean, such as his love of music, experience with community service, strong character and leadership skills.

The Education Foundation will offer a $500 scholarship to a PHS senior attending a not-for-profit accredited university, college, community college or trade school, starting in the summer or fall of 2014. The recipient must have a 3.0 cumulative GPA to apply.

Friends of Music offers the $1,000 Elizabeth March Fine Arts Scholarship to a graduating senior who will major or minor in choir, band or theater at a two- or four-year institution. Qualifications are three years of participation in: choir, band or theater in any combination; be a member of good standing in Tri-M, Thespians or NHS; and acceptance at the school of choice for music/theater.

The Angela Klipp Christell Memorial Scholarship is for a PHS student who will attend an accredited college, university or community college. Angela's family is looking to award this scholarship to a well-rounded student with a positive attitude.

The Joseph B. Koomar Scholarship is for a student planning to attend a two- or four-year college or university. It is recommended that the recipient be a well rounded student. Besides doing well in academics, the recipient should excel in at least one extra curricular activity. It also is recommended that the student exhibit a lot of desire and some financial need. The student must be planning to attend college and is in the top half of his/her class. This scholarship is given in memory of Joseph B. Koomar.

The James J. March Memorial Scholarship is for a PHS student who has an interest in continuing his/her education towards a career in healthcare, especially at University of Illinois--but not limited to that institution. The $1,000 is given by March's family, his legacy and March Family Dental Care.

The James R. McConkey Scholarship is offered to a PHS senior who will be attending an accredited college, university or community college in the fall, following graduation. The student must rank in the top half of the graduating class and exhibit a strong desire to succeed.

Peotone Community Scholarship Association scholarships are for students who plan to attend any accredited college, university or trade school. The Peotone Community scholarships--including memorial scholarships--are funded by the contributions of numerous community members and businesses. Winners of these scholarship will be announced at graduation.

The VanIten Family Scholarship is being offered to a Peotone High School senior who will be attending a college, university or trade school starting this summer or fall. This onetime $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to a student of commendable character, in good standing in the school and community, has shown a continuous high work ethic and whose post high school education is dependent upon scholarships and grants.

The Beulah Voigt Memorial Scholarship is for students planning to attend a two- or four-year college or university. It is given in memory of Beulah Voigt. Her family is looking for a well-rounded student who is in the top half of the class and exhibits high moral character and strong work ethic.

The Wilton Center PTO is offering the Wilton Center Elementary Scholarship to a former Wilton Center grade school student planning on attending an accredited college, university or community college. The student should exhibit high moral character and a strong work ethic.

Deadline is Tuesday, March 25, for the above scholarships only.

Additional scholarships:

Lee and Nola Werner will a $1,000 scholarship to a graduating senior from PHS or a homeschooled graduate from the 207U District. The scholarship will be awarded to a student who plans to pursue a Bible school education. The recipient must exhibit high moral character and a desire for a better understanding of the Bible. The award will be payable to the college the student chooses. Applications are available in the guidance office. Deadline to apply is April 18.

The Coach Wise Basketball Memorial Scholarship goes to a PHS senior male basketball team member who plans to attend a two- or four-year college or university. An essay "What has basketball meant to me?" will be required. Deadline to submit the essay is May 1. The scholarship will be announced at high school graduation in May.
