Crete Park District News

The following programs, unless otherwise indicated, are held at the Crete Park District's Willard Wood Center, 515 First Street in Crete. Pre-registration is required for all programs at the Willard Wood Center or online unless otherwise indicated. Register at least one week in advance to guarantee that the classes will run. Cooking For Little Ones is designed for children 3-5 years. Youngsters will learn how to improve fine motor skills along with hand-eye coordination. The class takes place on Wednesdays, July 9-30, from 10:15 to 10:40 a.m. The fee is $20 for residents to Crete Park District and $30 for nonresidents. An apron is needed and no stove cooking is involved.


Children ages 3-5 years may join Lunchbox Club. Bring a lunch bag and spend time munching with friends. When their bellies are full, they will move on to indoor and outdoor play time with songs, games, crafts and so much more. Class takes place on Wednesdays and Fridays, July 9-25, from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Fee: $56 for residents of Crete Park District and $85 for nonresidents.


A new art class will be held for 7-12 years called Summer Mosaic Art. Mosaic is a type of art using small pieces of tile or other materials (participants will use paper) stuck on a base to create an overall design. A larger image will be made by using smaller pieces. This is a three-session class held on Fridays, July 11, July 18 and July 25, from 2:20 to 3 pm. Fee for residents of Crete Park District is $22 and for nonresidents its $33.


In Drawing Adventures, children 6 to 12 years will learn how to create and keep their imaginations flowing while they draw amazing things. Class will be held on Fridays, July 11-August 1, from 1:30 to 2:10 p.m. Fee is $25 for residents of Crete Park District and $37 for nonresidents. Participants need to bring a sketch pad and colored pencils to class.


In the Center Style Summer Learning class, children 5-12 years will work on reading and math activities. It's designed to keep young minds active in a fun way over the summer break. Twenty minutes will be devoted to reading and 20 minutes to math. Class will be held on Wednesdays, July 9-30, from 9:30 to 10:10 a.m. Fee: is $38 for residents of Crete Park District and $57 for nonresidents.


Children 7-12 years can attend the Camp Field trip to the Blackberry Farm on July 11, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Take a step back in time at this living history museum where pioneer life is recreated through hands on fun. Parents are welcome to come along. Fee for each person is $20.


Summer Day Camp is geared for four years through eighth grade. Let them explore all while having fun where they will participate in nature activities, sports, cooperative and team building games. They will be kept busy with crafts, special events, cooking and field trips. Camp will run Monday-Friday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with a choice of three or five days a week. Also offered is Before and After Camp for those who need extended schedules. Fees and schedules vary.


Lego Camp will be held for 5-12 years. They will explore concepts in physics, mechanical engineering, structural engineering and architecture while playing with their favorite creations. Kids will be given instruction, design challenges and competitions with LEGO Technic and System components. Camp will meet July 7-11. Ages 5-6 years will meet from 9 a.m. to noon and 7-12 years will meet from 1 to 4 p.m. Class is held at Crete Park on Main. Contact the park district for fee information.


Horse Camp will be four days of riding and Horsemanship skills. Riders 7-18 years will learn how to groom, bridle and saddle horses. Every day will include riding lessons. On the last day, a horse show will be held for students to show off their new skills. Camp will be held at Nova Quarter Horse, 10129 187th Street in Mokena, Monday-Thursday, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. with the session running July 7-10. Contact the park district for fee information.
