As I write this article this afternoon on July 31, there are only 18 days before the staff returns to Manhattan SD 114 and only 20 days before we welcome back all of our returning students, along with some new faces. This is a very exciting time of year.
Since the end of the last school year, a lot of hard work has been taking place at each one of the buildings in order to have everything prepared by August for both the staff and student arrival.
Each year, the custodial and maintenance staff begin the process of cleaning, repairing, waxing, painting, and generally bringing back to life, our three campuses. All of them do an extraordinary job and it shows.
Some of the things we have accomplished this year include: installing a new sound system at the junior high, re-carpeting the junior high library, resealing the parking lot at Wilson Creek, replacing a portion of the roof at Anna McDonald, redoing the tile on the Anna McDonald stage, and preparing for the change to Lincoln-Way 210 transporting our students.
In addition, we have been working all summer on staffing needs for the new school year as we receive new students into the district and wish the very best to some of our students and families who are moving to another place and a new school.
As of this date, our student enrollment has increased by an additional six students from where we ended the last school year, and we anticipate that number will continue to increase before the first day of school.
We also have 150 new kindergarten students registered for this year already. That is very exciting!
I know that with the beginning of the year, our families, especially our students, are excited about learning who their teacher will be and what their classes will look like. All of this information will be available in HomeLogic, after 4 p.m. on Tuesday, August 5.
In addition, if parents are looking for school supplies lists, those lists are available on the main page of the school website: http://www.manhattan114.org.
Some important dates that everyone should be aware of and might want to mark on your calendar; August 13 - Sixth Grade and New Student Orientation (6 p.m.); August 14 - Third Grade Meet and Greet (9 to 11 a.m.); August 18 - Wilson Creek Supply Drop Off and Open House (6 to 7:30 p.m.); August 20 - First day of student attendance; August 26 - Junior High Back to School Night (6:45 p.m.); and August 28 - Anna McDonald Parent Information Night (6 to 8 p.m.).
For other important dates and events occurring throughout the school year, the district calendar can be found online at district website, at the top of the homepage.
2014-15 registration is still open, both for returning and new families to the district. We encourage everyone to go online and register as soon as possible so we can make sure we are ready for your children on August 20. Thank you very much.
