Snowshoe Program
"Snowshoe Family Adventure," a free, family program for persons at least 10 years of age, will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, December 28, at Monee Reservoir. Registration and a fee of $3 per person are required for this Forest Preserve District of Will County program. Looking for some outdoor fun while the kids are still on break from school? If so, come on out for some fresh air and take in the beautiful scenery of Monee Reservoir in the winter. In addition to teaching participants how to snowshoe, we will look for signs of animals and discuss nature in winter as we hike the trail. Then, we will warm up with a steaming cup of hot chocolate. Snowshoes will be provided if weather permits. Otherwise, we will hike the trail. This program will take place on a natural surface trail over uneven terrain. Monee Reservoir is at 27341 Ridgeland Avenue, west of Route 50 and south of Pauling Road, two miles south of Monee. For information and registration, call 708-534-8499.
Astronomy Program
"What's in the Sky This Month?" a free, family astronomy program sponsored by the Forest Preserve District of Will County, will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, December 28, at Monee Reservoir. Registration is required. Join backyard astronomers and discover what is in the evening sky during January. Among the nighttime items will be planets, the moon, orbiting spacecraft, comets, asteroids and a host of other objects. Please dress for the weather because most of the program will be held outdoors if weather conditions permit. This program will be on paved paths and over grass or asphalt to the viewing area. If star gazing is not possible, the program will be held indoors. Monee Reservoir is at 27341 Ridgeland Avenue, west of Route 50 and south of Pauling Road, two miles south of Monee. For information and registration, call 708-946-2216.
Winter Animals
"Animals in Winter," a free, family program for persons at least eight years of age, will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, December 29, at Thorn Creek Nature Preserve, 247 Monee Road in Park Forest. Registration is required for this Forest Preserve District of Will County program. Have you ever wondered how animals spend the winter? They have adaptations that allow them to survive even our harshest Midwest winters. At the program, participants will have the opportunity to snowshoe on trails to search for signs of animals preparing for winter. If there is no snow cover, we will walk the trails to search for animal signs. This program will take place on natural surface trails across uneven terrain.
