Letter to the Editor: Immigration Detention Center

Dear Editor:

I'm one of the "Concerned Citizens" in the Crete area outraged over the proposed 750-bed Immigration Detention Center, to be privately run by the Corrections Corporation of America. I live in Monee, but our son goes to Crete-Monee High School and we have the costly property tax bills to prove it.

Mayor Einhorn has run Crete like his own personal autocratic fiefdom now, for about 20 years. He's arrogant, insulting and dismissive of the citizens of that town. He touts this abomination as "economic development" for the area with 750 people being added to the local census, increasing federal funding. ICE would give the village money per head, per day and he would cut a deal with CCA, and we would all, thus benefit. Of course, the Mayor and his cronies would have control of any and all monies.

So, what's wrong with this picture? Guess what? We don't want our "neighbors" to be forced to live in cages, fed garbage and treated miserably. CCA is the bottom feeder of corporate America, making money off of human trafficking. The only thing they produce is misery. Families are torn apart - and for what?

Did the Indians demand "papers" of those coming off the Mayflower? Isn't the whole of the Southwest, Northern Mexico not too long ago, only to be stolen through aggressive warfare? Is it not true that NAFTA has made the economies of Central and South America "scream" forcing centuries-long subsistence farmers off their land to try to find a way to make a living to support their families? Why are 400,000 people being deported, per year under the great Obama regime? This is called "Democracy?"

Being "illegal" is a civil violation, not a criminal offense, but these people will surely be treated like "criminals" - horribly! The workers at the facility will be underpaid, while the big shots will rake in obscene profits. Bucolic Crete will thereafter be known as a "prison town" with all the problems that go with it.

This could very well mushroom into a flashpoint in this very real war on Americans - by the American government - local, state and federal. We've had enough of being bullied and lied to and forced to give up our rights. "Free speech" nowadays is a pitiful little pen, far from where the big shots plot, and if you get out of line, you'll get clubbed, gassed, tasered, flex cuffed and dragged off - just like the "illegals." So much for "American Exceptionalism." America is the poster child of a country gone bad!

Agree with you Mr. Rayson!! We do not want this Detention Center here in Crete. We have had "No Crete Detention" signs taken off our own property during the night. Someone is sneaking around and stealing the signs!! We have lived here for 24 years and do not want this built here. Einhorn and Durkin need to go away!! Kankakee wants the Detention Center - let me have it. Einhorn must listen to the community and not want he only wants. Let's ask who the investors would be with CAA?? Our town is just fine! Einhorn and the trustees have to stop giving tax breaks to companies that our located here in Crete. We understand a few years but why 3-20 some years break?? Citizens of Crete do not want the Detention Center and neither does the surrounding towns!! Stop all of this center stuff Einhorn!
