Green Garden Country Club's Popular Golf Dome Rises Again

The February 2011 blizzard took it down, but Green Garden Country Club has a brand new golf dome now

Attention golfers: The Green Garden Country Club Golf Dome is back!

Destroyed in the early February 2011 winter blizzard, the original dome has been sorely missed by the thousands of golfers who enjoyed putting, chipping and driving a few buckets of balls when bad weather limited time on the country club links over the winter.

But a new, even better dome now is in place and should be open today, according to Todd Russell, PGA and General Manager of the country club.

Russell noted, however, that time estimates for installation and inflation of the dome are a bit imprecise, so he advises going online to GreenGardenCC,com to check for the opening day.

As before, the dome will feature 42 hitting stations, a chipping green and a putting green. And it will be open again from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day.

But the new dome will have some improvements over the old one, too. It will feature hanging targets, a target green, a skylight in top and center, and climate control.

"I think probably it will be the nicest golf dome in the Chicago area," Russell smiled.

"It's a very popular dome. On a busy day, we have a couple hundred customers in there."

The 340-foot-by-300-foot dome collapsed under the weight of the winter storm that crippled the Chicago and suburban area for days last year. The storm left the fabric in tatters, so it could not be repaired. But in replacing it, the McEnery family (owners of the country club) opted for a sturdier three-ply material, instead of two-ply.

The spacious 75-foot-tall facility also is popular for fundraising events, but Russell noted that it most often is used for indoor golf.

Loss of the original dome ll months ago was very stressful, Russell conceded, and it was a long effort to get to the point where the new fabric was being installed.

"It was hard when it came down," he admitted. "We were just going into our busy season.

"But we always knew we would have the dome back.

"Obviously, we would have preferred that it didn't come down, but the new dome will be even better. The structure of it is a little different. The cabling system is more supportive, and it has three-layer fabric. And it will have the skylight in the center, and a new HVAC unit.

How much does a golf dome cost? Russell sidestepped the question with a grin. "A lot," he said. "It costs a lot."

"We're very excited to have it opening again, and we will have a grand re-reopening (in coming weeks)."

The country club dining room also will reopen in March. The country club and golf dome are at 9511 W. Monee-Manhattan Road.
