Lincoln-Way Central Student Council sponsored the third annual "Knight in Shining Armor" contest recently with more than 250 students turning out for the event.

Jake Welch was the winner of the contest which featured a lip sync performance, a talent performance, an interview, and a crowd support category via texting.

For the lip sync category, Jake was assigned by the judges to sing "Oh My God," by Usher. For the talent part, Jake sang the song, "Trouble with Girls," by Scotty McCrery.

"I sat on a stool on the stage to sing the song. I had to concentrate because I was so nervous. I just focused on the promise I made to my little sister, Rachel, that I would sing this song for her. She picked it out for me to sing in the contest," Jake explained.

Rachel is a freshman at Lincoln-Way Central and a big fan of her brother.

For the interview section, Jake answered two questions concerning his life motto and gave an impression. Jake loves to do impressions, so this part was easy for him. He gave an impression of Elmo and the Gingerbread Man, from the movie "Shrek."

"I have done impressions of different voices since I was a little kid. I enjoy doing them because it makes people laugh and have a good time," Jake commented.

The event was held in the Lee F. Rosenquist Auditorium at Central High School. Tickets were $5 to attend.

"The $5 to attend covers our costs. The winner receives two tickets to Prom and a rental tuxedo for free. The purpose of the event is to help establish more school spirit. The event succeeded in its purpose. It was a good night," Marissa Lee, president of the Student Council, related.

From the Central staff, Judges were Debbie Galvan, Missy McGrath, and SRO Deputy Ken Rafter. Nine senior boys were selected from a pool of applicants to be contestants.

Jake, a senior, played football his freshman, sophomore and junior years at Central. Currently, he is a member of the varsity boys track team.

His plans for next year include attending Joliet Junior College (JJC) and taking his general college education classes, then transferring to a college or university for his junior and senior years. Jake intends to major in history. His career goal is to become an historian/curator for a museum or a history teacher at the collegiate level.

"Plus, attending JJC will give me the opportunity to earn and save money for college," he added.

"I was completely in shock when they announced I had won. I couldn't comprehend that I had actually won. After the contest, a bunch of my friends and I went out to dinner and just enjoyed the evening," said Jake.
