Peotone Wins Over Coal City
Peotone wins over Coal City
Peotone junior guard Brittney Campione stands 5-foot-7, but she was able to battle Coal City's tall post players, and really did quite well on February 8.
Campione finished with 11 points, but had six key points in the third quarter as Peotone eliminated Coal City 52-29 in the Beecher Class 2A regional semifinal.
The Blue Devils had played the Coalers twice in the Interstate 8 conference play, and were able to prevail in both contests. But, the third time was not an easy contest for Peotone.
"Brittney is one of the skinny girls on the floor," said Blue Devils coach Steve Strough. "But, she had two big putback baskets."
At the conclusion of the first half, Peotone's Caitlin Cann (10 points, 3 assists, 3 steals) drilled in an impressive three-point basket from the right side of the floor for a 29-16 halftime lead.
"That shot really took the wind out of our sails," said Coaler coach Brad Schmitt. "They were getting second and third chance opportunities around the basket. They are the top team in our conference for a reason."
In the third quarter, Campione, who has great leaping ability, grabbed a Blue Devil rebound and put the ball back in the basket for a 31-19 lead. Seconds later, Campione muscled into the post area, and with authority she nailed another putback to make it 33-19. Kayce Nagel (7 points, 7 rebounds) drilled a rebound basket for a 35-19 lead.
Campione added another rebound hoop. Cann, on a great give and go pass to Nagel, made a basket. Julia Perri's basket pushed the margin to 41-20 at the end of the stanza.
"We just had to get some momentum going," said Campione. "I had a scoring burst. It really feels good for me to get those putbacks."
Nagel praised Campione's play in the third quarter.
"It really brought our energy up," she said. "That helped to get us going. Brittney can dribble the ball around anyone on the court. She can jump high too. "
Campione started the fourth quarter by drilling in a three-point basket for a 44-22 lead.
Later, Blue Devil Claire O'Neill (4 points) had a basket. Kayla Paeth (4 points) had a basket and a pair of free throws for a 50-30 lead.
Peotone's Shelby Maupin had six points and five rebounds.
