Beecher Falls To Seneca
Beecher falls to Seneca
Beecher coach Mike Meyer knew that the Ladycats would be challenged by Seneca, a Class 2A basketball power and recent Interstate 8 conference tournament champions.
Beecher's Amari Griffin registered a team-high 14 points, six rebounds and two blocked shots, but Seneca handled Beecher 52-44 in the semifinal round of the Beecher Class 2A regional contest on February 8.
Beecher finished with a 21-7 overall mark and they were co-champions in the River Valley conference.
"I am really proud of them," said Meyer. "They have been phenomenal. They really stepped up their play. I knew that this would be a tough match. We had trouble adjusting on the fly. We came out passive, and that was disappointing. Amari has always been good. She is a great athlete."
"We went out and played hard but could not come up with the win," said Griffin. "We were not able to shut their shooters down."
The Fightin Irish guards Lexi Brown and Alyssa Applebee each had 23 points. The Ladycats' great team defense held the Seneca center Coley Baker scoreless.
"We were able to stop Baker," said Meyer. "We played great team defense on her. Amari helped out in a big way."
Seneca jumped out to a 10-7 lead at the close of the first quarter. The Fightin Irish outscored the Ladycats by a 17-8 count to own a commanding 27-15 halftime advantage. Applebee drilled in a three-point basket at the buzzer ending the first half.
The Fightin Irish outscored Beecher by a 16-11 count in the third quarter to own a 43-26 advantage at the conclusion of the stanza. The Ladycats' senior guard Rachel Lee finished with 11 points, which included three treys.
"We went out and tried as hard as we could," said Lee. "We played great defense on Baker. We had never seen Seneca before and we did well. Amari played really well."
Beecher senior guard Paige Wehling finished with seven points.
"We had a great season," she said. "Things just did not work out for us."
Junior Ashley Carroll had four points and five rebounds.
"We did well, but they did better," she said. "Amari got the job done. Rachel hit some nice three-point baskets. She is a good shooter."
The Ladycats were able to cut the gap to 49-39, but Seneca then pulled away.
The Ladycats junior forward Meghan Jacobson finished with four points and five rebounds. Senior guards Jamie Ackman and Rachel Basel each had a basket.
