L-W West, Cappecci beat Thornridge
Lincoln-Way West varsity girls basketball team has had some great players, which included Kaitlyn Ray, who scored a school record 27 points last season. But, all records are made to be broken, as the Warriors' Alyssa Cappecci could attest to on February 6.
Cappecci, who was in a great shooting rhythm, registered a career high and school record 33 points, which included a very impressive sizzling hot 11- of-12 from the free-throw line. Cappecci also grabbed eight rebounds as the Warriors beat Thornridge 55-40 in SouthWest Suburban Red play in Dolton.
Warriors coach Ryan White praised Cappecci.
"Alyssa just kept getting open in the middle of their zone defense," he said. "She shot the ball nice and was good at the free-throw line, which really helped."
"I just took the ball to the basket," said Cappecci. "My teammates did a great job of getting me the ball."
Strongly backing up Cappecci was junior Amanda Hozzian, who finished with 10 points.
"Alyssa is a very good player," Hozzian said. "She has that great ability to drive to the basket. I really look up to her. I hope that I can play like her as a senior."
West team captain Myranda Eckberg was pleased with Cappecci.
"She was absolutely amazing," she said. "Every time she got the ball, she would make a play, either with a basket or a free throw. She really did well. We know she is our best scorer and shooter."
Cappecci scored seven of her team's points in the first quarter in helping West to a 14-9 lead. She registered six points in the second quarter to help the Warriors to a 31-11 halftime lead. She had 13 points at half time. For the first half, Hozzian had 10 points, Brittany Michalski added four points, Maggie Majcher and Chelsea Rocha each had a basket for West.
Cappecci took the ball to the basket in the third quarter. She had eight points while Majcher added a basket as West had a 41-20 lead at the close of the stanza. She added 12 points in the final quarter to finish with 33.
Hozzian fouled out early in the fourth quarter, but West had a 43-24 lead which led to the win.
"Amanda picked up too many silly fouls," said White. "We just want to keep her on the floor. It is a learning experience for her. Maggie Majcher had a nice baseline jump shot."
Majcher finished with six points.
On February 9, the Warriors lost Andrew in another Red game to close out the regular season. Hozzian topped West with 10 points.
The Warriors are 12-13 and 7-7 in the conference.
