Beecher Scholarship Drive Winding Down Share
In each of the years since Beecher Community Scholarship Fund's inception, the response to it has been heartwarming and 2009 is no exception. To date, 245 individuals, businesses and organizations have responded to the request to fund scholarships for this year's BHS graduates. All of the contributions are gratefully received, but one individual, who annually donates enough to have a scholarship in his name, is Dr. Daryl Younker of St. Augustine, FL. An excerpt from his letter that accompanied this year's donation follows: ''As usual, my check in the amount of $1,000 is enclosed. I know that with the economy in a slump and many people without jobs, it's not a good time for asking contributions. I can see why people are very concerned about where their money goes, and I hope they can see the extremely good job the Beecher Scholarship has done through the years and will still consider making a contribution to it. ''I was thinking about my graduation back in 1963 and being one of the two first recipients of the scholarship. Without the help of the Beecher Community Scholarship Association's financial assistance and the encouragement of the citizens of Beecher, I don't know how I ever would have ended up to where I am now.

''I considered it my 'duty' to succeed, since so many people were behind me, helping me along the way. I hope this year is once again a successful one, since there seems to be more students than ever that need that money in the pocket and that pat on the back to get them started off on the right foot.'' In addition to Dr. Younker's donation, the following contributions were also gratefully received this week: Wendell and Judy Wehling (in memory of John ''Jack'' Wehling, George and Penny Obradovich, Karl and Sue Schmidt, Lisa Stella, David and Heather Koehn, Jeannette Reiman (in memory of Edward Reiman) and Richard Mulcahy. Also, Dr. Michael and Karen Hiatt (in memory of Michael Hodgett), Scott and Sandy Tucker, Joseph and Karen Burgess, Beecher Elementary PTA, Lawrence and Linda Goedke, Beecher High School NHS and Beecher Sportsmen's Club. There is still time to have your donation included in this year's totals. Send it to Beecher Scholarship Association, PO Box 457, Beecher, IL 60401 or drop it off at First Community Bank and Trust, 1111 Dixie Hwy. Beecher. Russell Publications prints several community newspapers each week, serving Will, Kankakee and Cook counties.
