The Beautification of Beecher

For a number of years, the Beecher Beautification Commission has worked hard to improve the village's image.

This has not been easy work and the few commission members go all out to make it a showcase.

Many residents of other towns come to see how the commission members have worked so hard to showcase the village.

On Saturday, May 23, commission members were all around town planting flowers in various places. There are hanging baskets along Penfield and Route 1. There are plantings in the flower boxes on the bridges of Miller Street and Penfield Avenue. There are various plantings at Lions Park, Depot Park, the Beecher Womens' Club Park, along various streets downtown, at the AMVETS Memorial Park and at village hall. There are many other locations where flowers have been planted, all in an effort to make the community a beautiful place in which to live in and visit.

For those who want to know, the commission members, not only plant flowers, but they raffle off quilts, host the annual house walk in December and have various other fundraisers for their projects.

Recently, residents may have seen a new gazebo at Depot Park. This was the effort of many years of fundraising by the commission, especially from the house walks. Thanks to the commission, there is another place for residents to have weddings, parties and special events.

Beautification Commision members are: Village President Paul Lohmann, Sandy Lohmann, Commission President Harold Lattz, Vice-President Julie Riechers, Secretary Jackie Hameister, Treasurer Barb McWhorter, Jean Smith, Steve and Paula Weishaar, Tawny Sippel, Don McWhorter, Debbie Reising and Julie Cleary. These members are often helped by their spouses when the planting season is in effect.

''This is a large effort,'' said Village President Lohmann. ''I really appreciate the work these people do. It makes the village look great. Beecher doesn't have to be ashamed of the way it looks. I hope our residents take the time to see what the commission does.''

''There are so many places that will look better with a little color,'' said Sippel. Even with the decreases in revenue for the commission, its members have tried to do the best they can with the funds available.
