Summer reading program at Beecher Library Share
Now that school is over, it is time to consider continuing your reading skills and interests. ''Reading on the Wild Side'' is the name chosen for Beecher Community Library's summer reading program. This six-week program begins on June 15. Registration takes place at the library on June 15 at 9 a.m. The program will continue until Monday, July 27, when all reading logs are to be turned in. ''All children and adults are encouraged to participate in the program,'' said Library Board President Shirley Biery. ''Special awards will be given.'' In school, children are rewarded for good reading with good grades. While the library does not give grades, it can award prizes for readers. Head Librarian Carol Harris enumerated the prizes.

1- ''For reading 300 minutes, the reader will receive an ice cream cone from Buddys. 2- For reading 600 minutes, the reader will receive an ice cream sundae from Buddys. 3- For reading 900 minutes, the reader will receive a free book.'' There are three age categories - 0 to 6 years, 7 to 11 years, and 12 and up. The top reader in each age category will receive a special prize. There is an adult reading program, as well. When an adult reader finishes a book, he or she will be given a coupon. At the end of the program, there will be a drawing for the grand prize. In addition, when an adult reader finishes three books, the reader will receive a coupon for tea or coffee from Teapots or an ice cream cone. Another surprise this year: Library staff will include ''Surprise Coupons'' in each book checked out and read. This extra applies to children and adults. On June 18, the library will hold a special program opening with exotic animals from Settlers' Pond, a hoofed and exotic animal shelter/rescue. This event will be held in the sunken garden area next to the Beecher Community Hall, across the street from the library, from 1 to 3 p.m. Some animals that you might see are: Jack, the Kangaroo; Daisy Mae, a baby kangaroo; Jolie, a baby wallaby; and other animals. To participate in the program, come to the library and get your paw prints and reading log. Upon registration, each child will receive a special gift, courtesy of Children's Plus in Beecher.
