Beecher's hidden treasure

Settler's Pond, a shelter primarily for hoofed and exotic animals, rescues animals of all types. Homes are found for some of the orphaned animals, while others take up permanent residence at the shelter-farm, at 1301 Offner Road, in Beecher. One will see horses, goats and cows, and also a zebra, camel and peacocks.

Owner Pinky Janota has a special place in her heart for marsupials including raising Jack and Daisy Mae, the Kangaroos, and Jolie, Little Man and Sissy, the Wallabies. Although the assortment of animals compares to a small zoo, each and every animal is precious to Janota. In fact, Janota even cares about wild burros, which she trains for the government so they are not killed.

Janota loves to help the helpless. Every animal has a story. Many, she has traveled cross-country to save. Others, she has spent nights bottle feeding and comforting. Some have been through multiple operations. All are loved and cared for.

On June 27, nearby residents were invited to visit Settler's Pond for its 11th annual fund raiser. More than 300 people took advantage of the fun and helped to support the animals.

The day included excitement for the kids with tractor and train rides, moon jumps, miniature golf, and seed tables for digging. Adults were entertained with a car and antique tractor show and plenty of shopping. Of course, all were thrilled by the collection of animals for viewing.

Anyone who missed the opportunity to see the animals may visit Beecher's hidden treasure from September 26 to October 31. One can enjoy the pumpkin patch, petting zoo, hay rides and corn maze, as well as the shelter's critters. In addition, Settler's Pond will be open daily November 27-December 23 for ''Christmas on the Farm.''

For more information, call Settler's Pond at 946-2448 or visit www.settlerspondshelter.net. All proceeds support the animal sanctuary.
