Town painted purple for Relay

Share

Relay for Life committee members will ''paint the town purple'' on Saturday, July 11, as a reminder of the upcoming event.

Peotone's Relay for Life, a nationwide fund-raiser for the American Cancer Society, will be held on July 31-August 1 from 4 p.m. to 6 a.m. with a theme of ''Around the World for a Cure.''

''We'll be hanging up purple bows and ribbons throughout town as a reminder of when the relay is and why we're celebrating the survivors,'' relay chairperson Stacey Morris said.

Anyone is invited to attend the relay or help decorate the town. Residents are meeting at 9 a.m. at Swanson Development on July 11.

Businesses and area residents can begin decorating their homes or buildings on July 6, with the week of decorating culminating on Saturday.

The relay committee invites businesses to show their support by painting their windows or decorating their stores with ribbons and banners.

Morris has signs, ribbons, bows, banners and paint available to anyone who would like to decorate their yard, home or business.

At this point, there are 20 teams with about 140 participants signed up to participate in the Relay for Life. The event will begin at 4 p.m. with a cancer survivor check-in, followed by a survivor dinner at 5 p.m. The opening ceremonies will be held at 6 p.m.

The relay committee is still looking for volunteers to help at the survivor dinner and help with activities for children.

The village of Peotone has created a relay team by combining with the police and fire departments.

Police Chief Bill Mort said the police and fire departments have issued a challenge between the two entities. The contest will be held at the relay and the losing team will have to wash and wax the equipment of the other entity. Mort said they also plan to walk a combined 50 miles during the night of the relay.

''We're trying to support the Relay for Life and do some things internally,'' Mort said. ''It's a good cause.''
