New season off to a great start for MYSA

Search for your shin guards, lace up your cleats, and grab a water bottle. The soccer season has begun!

On a hot and sunny day in Manteno on Saturday, August 15, 81 teams comprised of children aged 5-13 gathered at Heritage Park in Manteno to play their first games of the season for Manteno Youth Soccer Association's (MYSA) Recreational Co-ed Soccer program.

Games began at 9 a.m., with the last game starting at 2 p.m., and they included children from Beecher, Grant Park, Manteno and Peotone.

Concessions were available and will continue to be every Saturday until the end of the soccer season, October 17. Concessions are run by parent volunteers and offer a variety of foods: pizza, hotdogs, nachos, popcorn, assorted candy, pop, water and Gatorade drinks. Concessions proceeds help to fund the MYSA program.

MYSA President Chad Miller commented, ''MYSA gives an opportunity for all children to play soccer, from first timers to seasoned veterans. Everyone that signs up gets to play at least half a game. So, come out and see these kids having fun playing soccer.''

Miller added, ''I would also like to thank everyone for volunteering their time and talent to make all of this possible. Next year, Jason Cobstill will be taking over the president's duties. When you see him at the park, be sure to thank him for carrying on this program that has been going on for over 20 years and has had tens of thousands of kid's pass through.''

Important dates to remember are Picture Day (Don't forget the envelope!) and Grandparents Day - Saturday, September 12 (Kids, bring your grandparents for a special treat).

Coach Appreciation Day will be held on Saturday, October 3. (Remember to thank your coaches for volunteering their time).

Also, on October 3, a MYSA raffle will be held. Tickets are $1 each or 6 for $5. Some of the items to be raffled off are a soccer coffee cup, soccer scarves, hats, pillows, a backpack and an MYSA hooded sweatshirt. Winning names will be posted at the concession stand on Saturday, October 3.

On Tuesday, September 29, at 6 p.m. during Manteno High School's Boys Soccer Senior Night, MYSA will hold an appreciation night, giving a few youth soccer teams an invitation to play soccer on the high school field for the 15-minute half time intermission.

MYSA board members are: President-Chad Miller; Secretary-Tricia Dotson; Technology-Cathy Creek; Treasurer-Dale Kiedaisch; and Town Coordinators - (Manteno) Jason Cobstill; (Peotone) Michelle Haag, Kati Cann and Jenny Biedron; (Grant Park), Mike Garbaciak and Tara Rosales; (Beecher) Deb VonAlven, Kathy Hall and Jennifer Bradford; Public Relations-Jamie Lockwood; and Picture Day Coordinator-Jamie Lockwood. Kale Sellers is head referee.

Special thanks goes to the Manteno High School boys soccer tTeam and its coaches, Jake Emerson, Zack Dowdy and Kyle Haworth, for their help in getting the nets up and to the Village of Manteno for the great conditioning of the playing surfaces.
