Crochet work wins at State and Will County fairs

Judy Wolf of Peotone is still smiling.

On a whim, she entered a handmade christening gown in the Illinois State Fair this year. Her work of art won first place and Best of Show.

''Creme de la creme works by people from all counties in Illinois were there,'' Judy, 68, said, ''and I won Best of Show. It was the thrill of a lifetime.''

The christening gown, also made on a whim, Judy said, was crocheted and features ribbon around the armholes and neckline. It took her three months to finish the gown.

''I taught myself how to crotchet and knit,'' Judy said.

Judy's girlfriend drove her to Springfield to submit her christening gown in the fair that ran from Aug. 12 to 22. It was the first time she entered anything in the state fair.

''I heard I had won a blue ribbon,'' Judy said, ''but when I learned I won a rosette (Best of Show), I had tears in my eyes. I was floored.''

A judge commented on her work saying, ''You deserve this. It is the most beautiful christening gown we've seen here.''

Judy plans to package the gown safely in a box, along with winning ribbons and details on the gown, and give it to her daughter, Sandra Allen of Rolling Meadows. Sandra is expecting a baby in December.

Judy's awards didn't stop at the State Fair, however.

A pillow she crocheted also won first place and Best of Show.

''I've entered the Will County Fair before but never won a rosette (Best of Show) there,'' Judy said.

The afghan took her roughly three months to create.

Other awards she won for crocheted works in the Will County Fair include: first place for an adult coat, second place for a crib blanket and first place for a Christmas decoration.

You can see Judy crocheting from 1-5 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 13, at the Old Mill Fall Fest at the H.A. Rathje Peotone Mill, 427 W. Corning Ave. in Peotone. Children can also try their hand at crocheting.
