State (79th) Lisa Dugan attended a ceremony at Washington Township Center, 30200 Town Center Road in Beecher, to celebrate the extended service of the Washington Township Transportation Agency. The service is now available five days a week, up from three days. Issues concerning veterans in the district who can't get transportation to receive medical treatment are also being addressed. Dugan wrote a personal check for $500 to assist in this endeavor. New hours for Washington Township buses Share
The Washington Township Dial-A-Ride Program now is available five days a week to disabled residents, senior citizens and anyone who resides in Washington Township. The transportation service had been available only two days a week until RTA selected Washington Township to receive a matching funds grant. As of September 1, the Washington Township Transportation Service is available Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The first pickup is at 9:30 a.m. and the last ride is at 2:30 p.m. Riders should schedule their rides as soon as medical appointments are made. Call 946-2026 before noon Monday through Friday. Lift-equipped buses are available to residents using wheelchairs or walkers, or who have limited mobility, by requesting one in advance. Transportation can be arranged for shopping, and for trips to nursing homes, the village hall, restaurants, hair or medical appointments, to visit a friend or relative or to attend any township- or village-sponsored event. Service is available beyond the township, but only within reason. Same day service is available for most trips within the township. For service to local hospitals and clinics out of the service area, call for information. Service is on a first come, first served basis. In the event of scheduling conflicts, disabled residents will be serviced first. The cost per ride is only $1 one way or $2 round trip for rides within the township. Only medical rides are available outside the township, and they are $2 one way or $4 round trip.

Watch for the bus to arrive and be ready to come out of the house right away and have exact fares available when boarding the bus. Service is curb-to-curb. Wait until the bus has come to a full stop before approaching it. If there are any packages to carry (limit two), make sure they are outside of the home. All carry-on items must be secured on the floor between the seats and not in the aisle. Riders need to stay seated while the bus is in motion. Eating, drinking or smoking are not allowed on the bus. Washington Township bus drivers are there to serve; however, they are not allowed to pull into a driveway without contacting the office in advance. Also, they may not enter homes or accept tips. Always remember to cancel or reschedule trips if a scheduled pickup time cannot be met or if plans have changed. Barb Dorman is a reporter for Russell Publications.
