Beecher School District FY2010 budget adopted Share
Beecher School Board held a budget hearing on Monday, September 14, for the 2009-2010 fiscal year budget. The tentative amended financial plan was approved by the board (see box at right). This budget changed from last month's proposed budget in the Educational area because the auditor recommended that lunch monies be reported in the budget. George Obradovich, Beecher School Superintendent, emphasized the efforts that the school board made by cutting over $200,000 in expenses, thereby allowing the overall budget to be in the black. He also pointed out that this budget is ''estimated'' because the state has not committed to its aid amounts at this time. The October sschool board meeting scheduled for Monday, October 12, will be postponed until Wednesday, October 14, since Monday is Columbus Day, a school holiday. New teachers for this school year include Brittany Williams, Beecher District's music teacher. She has music and education degrees, with her specialty in violin and vocals. She travels between the schools for music classes. Beecher Junior High hired Kristie Smaga as an aide who also will be coaching the BJHS basketball team with Ashley Mosley from the high school.

Crystal VonAlvon is working at the high school in the special education department. Although this is her fifth year of teaching, it is her first time teaching high schoolers. She commented that this is a ''positive change.'' Last week President Obama gave a speech encouraging America's students to be responsible for their own education. After reviewing the transcript, Obradovich approved the school district's showing of Obama's inspirational speech to the students. Each school chose how to present the speech. Beecher Elementary School shared it with the fourth and fifth grade students along with a discussion about its content. The junior high reported that 98% of its students watched the speech in individual classes. In addition, various high school classes showed the speech to students. As members of the PTO, Rose Haggerty and Karen Scrementi were thanked by the school board for the past PTA's sizeable donation toward playground equipment at the elementary school. A new swing set is now available for the kindergarten through fifth grade students. Repair work on Beecher Elementary's second story has been completed as scheduled. Obradovich reported that the renovated area ''looks new.'' The transportation committee is working on the purchase of a used minibus for transportation of special education children who live in the Beecher district. The school board approved the lowest of three bids for district copy paper at a price of $24.25 per case. This needed board approval because the total cost exceeded $15,000.
