Golf course, bowling alley and Buddys all close  Share
The signs on the doors of Cardinal Creek golf course and Striker's Bowling Alley in Beecher say: Temporarily closed until further notice. The sign outside of Buddys Drive-In says: Closed for the season. Why did these businesses mysteriously close on Oct. 4 without any advance notice? It's difficult to determine at this time. The Beecher Herald has left several messages for Jack Mayher, owner of MGM Construction Inc. of Orland Park, the company that purchased the three businesses several years ago. There's been no response to the Herald's calls. In fact, the phone at MGM has gone straight to voice mail each time a call was made. A representative at the Will County Circuit Clerk's office said none of the properties were listed as foreclosures when the names of the three local businesses, MGM and Mayher were searched on the database. Likewise, the U.S. Bankruptcy court in Chicago showed no bankruptcy filings under these names. MGM also owns Sunset Cove and Eagle's Creek subdivisions in The Preserve at Cardinal Creek. The subdivisions were developed and built around the golf course over the past several years. The village board recently decided to withhold an $850,000 letter of credit from MGM because of work that was not completed, including final road surfacing, curb work, water valve installations and fine grading. The work will be bid in spring 2010.
Residents at Sunset Cove recently complained to the village that MGM failed to complete sprinkler systems and landscaping that were promised by the company as part of the purchase price. Two homeowners finally paid to have the work completed at their own expense after they said they waited months with no response from MGM. In September, the board agreed to withhold a $15,000 letter of credit to reimburse the two homeowners and pay for landscaping at the remaining four homes.
